Senator Considers Renaming Pentagon After Reagan
Amendment Calls For 'Ronald Reagan Defense Building'

WASHINGTON -- An amendment proposed by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist would change the name of the Pentagon to "The Ronald Reagan Defense Building."

Frist said he would offer the amendment to a defense spending bill.

The amendment will be debated over the next couple of weeks when the bill goes back to the Senate floor.

40. State of Georgia ignored the renaming of Clark Hill Lake for Thurmond
Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 04:34 PM by LastDemocratInSC
Clark Hill Lake straddles the GA / SC line in the central part of the Savannah River. It's a beautiful lake and a popular destination at all times of the year. Several years ago South Carolina wanted to rename the lake for Strom Thurmond - as if we needed another monument to his ego.

The Army Corps of Engineers wasn't keen on the idea and neither was the state of Georgia, so the politicians who were pushing for the change decided to let the matter just fade away.

Ole Strom, meanwhile, was outraged by this lack of attention to himself and started called in political favors. The result is that the Army Corps or Engineers was forced to change the formal name of the lake. The only problem was that almost everybody just ignored the change.

The name has more acceptance on the SC side of the lake, of course, but not so on the Georgia side. Most official official state publications, such as the Georgia State Parks website still refer to the lake as Clark Hill. It's common to see the name listed in real estate ads as Clark Hill / Thurmond.

Maybe there's a lesson in this.

6. Brace yourself, baby
After the old putz finally gets planted, the naming frenzy will start. Hell, they tried naming everything for the old bastard while he was still alive, unheard of before St. Ronnie's cult got going.

Naming an obsolete, dangerous airport and a heap of DC mansontry that exemplified the phrase "cost overrun" were bad enough. Prepare to have a familiar landmark and large street in every city renamed for the old schmuck.

The only thing I'd like to see called Reagans are bounced checks and defaulted loans.

77. I propose a trade.
Release ALL and I mean ALL of the Reagan administration's papers, give the scholars a year to study them and THEN we decide if we are going to name things after him.

History has not yet judged Mr. Reagan presidency because * tossed all of the reforms passed after the Nixon fiasco out the window. He has managed to cover up Mr. Reagan's true legacy by executive order. Why Congress has allowed the Executive Branch to overide legislation they passed specifically to attempt to prevent abuses BY the Executive Branch is beyond me.

If President Reagan is to honored as a truely great president, shouldn't we know what he truely accomplished? I have no problem putting his visage on Mount Rushmore, every denomination of currency in existence, every street, road, lake, stream and outhouse IF and ONLY IF he is still considered a great president after we know what went on during his adminstration.

12. Sad, disgusting, all the normal adjectives
He hasn't even been dead a week and they want to start naming things after him? First, the Pentagon is a name that should never be changed (too unique a building and name) and second, if the naming is to happen it should be on its own bill, not tacked onto a spending bill. Sure, he was a pretty popular president - but that doesn't mean the pentagon should be renamed after him! Name a carrier or something, it works for the other presidents!

(Side Note: There has been a proposal in my hometown to rename the county courthouse after Reagan - A stupid move: It should be named after a local figure at least)

27. This is Appropriate
Like our current White House occupant, Reagan loved war.
This is the only renaming that I've heard about that seems entirely appropriate.

Reagan allowed or ordered hundreds of thousands of innocent people in East Timor, Central America, and the Middle East to be killed. He loved selling weapons to anyone with a few dollars - even if they were fighting each other ... just ask Saddam Hussein and the Ayatolla Khomeini.

So, I say we embrace this proposal ... it tells the truth about Reagan. He was another chickenhawk warmonger - and that's a fact.

Indeed, we might "honor" two great warmongers and suggest that the Pentagon be renamed the "R.W. Reagan-G.W. Bush War Building."

We're sure going to need a bunch of mathematicians to come up with an estimate, and a rather large swath of the mall to boot.

Hmm. Perhaps we can have a feature that gives a historical overview back in time as many years as it will take to pay the thing off. Ahh, perspective is always a worthy pursuit.

50. The Reagan Gulag
Reagan launched the "Drug-War," and although the drugs are still around, since "The Great Communicator's" unititive, America's prisons have ballooned to four times their size.

Sometimes, in my prayers, I thank the Gipper that he didn't start a war against masterbation, but I digress.

The "Land of the Free," now sports the highest incarceration rate on earth. Not quite as high as Pol-Pot's yet, but fifty percent higher than Stalin's USSR police-state.

One out of every seventy-five American males is currently locked up. Most of them are non-violent. Reagan put into motion the social experiment that has brought about this draconian incarceration rate. Our lock-up rate is around ten times that of any other first-world nation.

Had a Democrat been President instead of the "Gipper," he might have subverted those prison-building funds into free public health-care, or better schools, or balancing the budget, or creating first-world mass transit like the Europeans and the Japanese have.

How many people will the Neo-Cons have to lock up before Sun-Moon Reagan peers down from his golden thrown in the billowing clouds and bellows to the self-abusing sheeple, "Enough Already!"

Will it suffice to lock up one US man in fifty? How about if our police really crack down and jail one in every ten, and should we gas the darker half to make room for the new ones?

When will Amerika be pure enough to please his Smiling Benevolence? How can we best serve the Gipper?

53. Reagan just started a new "offensive" in war on drugs
In 1969, shortly after his inauguration, President Nixon declared a war on drugs and crime.

In 1970 the modern "War On Drugs" is born as the "Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act". Title II (the "Controlled Substances Act" or "CSA") established 5 "schedules" of substances, with schedule "one" prohibiting substances even from medical use (Marijuana was placed in schedule one, despite the recommendations of the task force that marijuana not be criminalized). The CSA affects an absolute prohibition on many substances, and provides for federal law enforcement to act even on an intrastate level.

In 1973 Nixon reorganizes the various federal drug law enforcement agencies into the Drug Enforcement Agency, or DEA.

(not to negate other points that you made, just adding some background)

In 1986 Nancy Reagan begins the "Just Say No" campaign. While there is an initial drop in drug use, drug use again rises rapidly within a few years.

In 1988 the Office Of National Drug Control Policy (office of the "Drug Czar) is formed. The first Drug Czar is William Bennett (who ironically is a smoker, drinker, and compulsive gambler).

Frist and company are just pissed, and I don't mean "off."

Dumb drunk bastards.

68. The WMATA (transit system here in DC) has to be happy to hear this
They just got through spending all that money changing all their signs and literature referring to the stop at National Airport to Ronald Reagan National Airport. Now they'll have to go back and do it again, renaming all their Pentagon stops to Ronald Reagan Defense Building.

And since it won't be adequately funded by Congress, they'll have to raise fares. Why two out of three of Virginia's congressmen in this area are Republicans, I'll never understand.

69. Picture this
A few years from now... Jump in a cab in DC and say, "Take me to Reagan." You could end up in dozens of different places. Or there is a 911 call for "emergency at Reagan." Where would the police and firefighters go?

Too bad they wasted the name on the airport. The rule, for safety and security reasons, is usually to have just one "thing" in a community have the same name.

70. The Politics of Reagan is More than the Re-Naming!
NOW! Other than the Reagan “deification” by Frist, I would care to become involved with a more serious matter of how democracy operates within the “legislative” body of our country. This is very much related to the use of an amendment that Frist wishes to “offer (as) the idea to gauge reaction”.

The issue of whether “this” is renamed “that”, or “that” is renamed “this” is absolutely bizarre to me. I fully understand the “renaming”, or, originally “naming” of anything for ANY former president. Obviously, things can get out of hand. I am 100% against any currency being replaced or initiated with “Reagan in hand”. I wouldn’t care if there was some bridge somewhere that was named after Reagan.

What I care about is the legislative process that allows so many AMENDMENTS to be “tacked on” to MAJOR legislation for the purpose of politics. And, this has much more to do with the everyday “business” of Congress, than it has to do with Reagan. This is so confusing the American public who take the time to review their representatives record. A member of Congress may vote against a “bill” because of a “certain” amendment being tacked onto it, but that member may have not been against the main body of legislation. Does this start sounding familiar in the case of Kerry??

Oh! By the way I like Hamilton on the “TEN”, and, FDR on the “TEN”!

71. Setting aside the politics...
That's just absurd. Why don't they make some reasonable proposals (why do I even ask?)? Leave our money and gov't buildings alone - isn't an airport enough? They are playing up his role as Statesman (:eyes:) so why not something related to diplomacy, international relations, etc. ? A Memorial... fine. A building of some sort... fine, but some things need to be left alone.

73. Am I the only one who is glad Frist isn't practicing medicine any more?
I mean, other than his patients and cat lover's everywhere. Has that moron done anything that makes any sense? I personally think they ought to name a cardboard carton manufaccturing facility after Reagan. That way, when the thousands of homeless peole that he put on the streets in the 80s go to bed they will be able to remember to thank him in their prayers.

75. NOTHING should be named after a president until
Nothing should be named after a president until after their records are unsealed. They want to pass laws sealing their records for a certain number of years? Fine, but then they can't be memorialized until their records are unsealed. We should have the complete measure of the man before we start erecting statues.
