DeLay Seeks Child Welfare Power for Bush
Edited on Thu May-20-04 05:18 PM by khephra
WASHINGTON -- House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told House colleagues Thursday that abused and neglected children "are dying and it's our fault" because programs designed to protect them are overlapping and ineffective.

Testifying from the dais in a House Government Reform Committee, DeLay said government agencies could be reorganized more quickly if Congress cedes to President Bush the authority to do the work.

Congress for decades has appropriated more and more money and created dozens of programs, bureaus and agencies to address child protection, he said. Many are redundant, funded with different pots of money and may not be working.

DeLay, R-Texas, said the problem of abused and neglected children "is real and it's acute and the response at the state and especially the federal level has been reactive and clumsy."

He said a White House task force on disadvantaged youth identified 339 federal programs that are charged with helping children in some way; 13 federal agencies administer more than 120 programs that provide mentoring.

1. DeLay and Child Welfare?
I never thought I'd see those words in the same sentence.

12. they want more kids - remember Jeb's Florida missing children?
Massive numbers of "missing children" from Jeb Bush's Florida Department of Families and Children. Now they want to take the "we lost the kids" act nationally. Truly terrifing.

8. They'll rework the programs into one or
two then not fund them. That's their modus operandi.

7. Tom DeLay caring about children
Is that not ridiculous on its face?

I'm certain the plan is to let the Executive handle childrens' welfare so that the White House can allot a pittance to the states and be done with it. I think the phrase they like to use is 'drowning the federal government in the bathtub'.

It's so nice to see that Tom DeLay has a soft spot for disadvantaged children in his heart.

11. At the heart of this there is no doubt a plan to eliminate funding
for these programs in the name of "streamlining". A bastard like DeLay isn't about do anything progressive, he will simply make it sound that way at first.

Edited on Thu May-20-04 05:22 PM by Blasphemer
Any plan that involves "ceding authority" to Shrub is not only scary but doomed to failure. Yes, the problem, is acute but the idea that * is the answer is absurd.

18. Gee, Tom...when you and Junior can follow through on...
..."No child left behind", maybe then you'll have enough credibility to talk about "Child Welfare".

And speaking of credibility, here are the views of Tom Delay on overseas sweatshops and other subjects:

21. So that they could call him father or
maybe something more grandiose. This is one of the sickest things I've read because it is reminiscent of what went on in the Jim Jones People's Temple. He had custody of a bunch of people's children because he convinced them to sign the documents. He also had people convinced that he himself was god. That guy had a heavy arsenal, too.

Bush's playbook resembles a patchwork of megalomaniac history.

22. Tom DeLay wouldn't know child welfare
if it came up and bit him on the @$$.

This is a combo move to consolidate power in the hands of Shrub (and later, DeLay when he becomes Pretzeldent - hey, he thinks it's a done deal) and to make it easier to control funding to ensure that his edicts are obeyed.

Yet another social program in danger, except this one involves children in need. Not just screwing with their educations, but with their very lives. Unbelievable.

24. Maybe DeLay would like to start with protecting Iraqi children,
especially those being bombed by Americans to death or mutilation, not to mention those being tortured while in U.S. military custody?

I guess DeLay isn't interested in those children.
