(Daniel) Pearl's Widow Says Media's Role Challenged
By Associated Press

May 17, 2004, 8:07 AM EDT

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The widow of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl told a group of graduating journalists that the Iraq war and its aftermath will challenge the news media to maintain its role as government watchdogs.

Mariane Pearl warned the 43 graduates of the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism on Saturday that official manipulation, nationalist sentiments and ideology all will make it difficult for news organizations to maintain the public's trust.

"Truth and honesty after the war are going to become very rare commodities," said Pearl, 38.

1. "Truth and honesty after the war are going to become very rare commodities
They were pretty rare before the war IMHO. We as a Nation should be very ashamed of how we have allowed this all to come to pass. We need to Tar & Feather Rush Limbaugh and all his wanna-be followers.

3. Funny that she should say that
"Truth and honesty after the war are going to become very rare commodities,"

Considering her husband was an employee of a GOP propaganda organ.

4. The Wall Street Journal generally has an excellent news section
OTOH, their Editorial page has a bunch of howling Cro-Magnon throwbacks.

Unfortunately, their editorial views DO sometimes soil their news pages.

Note: Recently, the WSJ gave more coverage than any other paper had to Bush sitting in the Sarasota elementary school classroom for seven (or more) minutes after having been told by his Chief of Staff Andy Card that a second airliner had crashed into the WTC and that the Nation was under attack. They actually reviewed the pertinent videos for their article.
