(NY St. Sen.) Velella to plead guilty to felony rap, spend a year in jail

ALBANY — State Sen. Guy Velella, facing bribery charges in a trial scheduled to start next week, will plead guilty to one felony charge and accept a year in jail as part of a plea deal, sources said Thursday....

The powerful Velella is expected to resign his Senate seat before entering his guilty plea, thereby protecting his ability to collect a state pension, said a Republican close to the senator....

Velella’s supporters had created a fund to raise money for his legal defense and the senator had also been tapping his own Senate campaign committee and relying on contributions from his Senate GOP colleagues to help pay his hefty legal bills....

Guy Velella has been in the Senate for 18 years and was in the state Assembly for 10 years before that. He is also the longtime chairman of the state Senate Republican Campaign Committee and is Bronx county GOP chairman.

Kudos to the News for actually using the R-word, repeatedly, when describing today's episode of "Republicans Behaving Badly".

Say bye-bye to one of the real old-line Repuke power brokers in N.Y. State -- or should his byline read "Guy Velella (R-Sing Sing)"??

Now, imagine the reaction from the press if a Democrat resigned in the nick of time to save his pension, and raided his own campaign fund for legal fees!!
