US says Iraq hostage shown on Al-Arabiya is American

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US State Department said a Western hostage taken in Iraq (news - web sites) and shown on the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television was a US national.

"We certainly now believe him to be a US citizen," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters. "The US embassy in Amman and the consular office in Baghdad are working to ascertain the welfare and whereabouts of this US citizen."

Boucher declined to give any more details about the man, saying only: "We are confirming that to the best of our knowledge he is a US citizen."

He said that relatives of the man had contacted the US embassy in Jordan after seeing the images, but did not immediately identify the man
