The Atlanta Journal-Constitution--- Republicans and Democrats at the national level are keeping close tabs on the Georgia race, which could help the GOP extend its one-vote advantage in the Senate.
The race to succeed retiring Democrat Zell Miller follows last year's upset victory by Republican Saxby Chambliss over then-Sen. Max Cleland and major gains by Republicans in the state.
Kicking off his bid for the job held by Miller, Isakson stressed lower taxes, support for President Bush's war on terrorism and spending cuts. The Marietta native will take that message to 13 cities and towns over the next week, from the mountains to Savannah. ---
In next July's GOP primary, Isakson will face U.S. Rep. Mac Collins of Jackson, millionaire businessman Herman Cain and Al Bartell, a 2002 Republican candidate for lieutenant governor. State Sen. Mary Squires of Norcross is the only announced Democratic candidate, but former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young also is contemplating a bid. ---
