Mayor Bloomberg: ‘I Have My Own Army’

By Hunter Walker 10:06am

In a speech at MIT last night to discuss the packed sweepstakes to build a tech campus in New York City, Mayor Bloomberg said he prefers City Hall to the White House. Almost immediately after Mayor Bloomberg dampened recent speculation he’s eyeing a White House bid, he added fuel to the fire by explaining why a mayor would be the best person for the job.

Mayor Bloomberg’s recent criticism of President Obama for allowing the debt reduction Supercommittee to fail led many political tea leaf watchers to believe he’s eyeing a potential White House bid. To the dismay of those who hope he’ll mount presidential campaign, Mayor Bloomberg began his speech last night by discussing why City Hall is just fine by him.

“I have my own army in the NYPD, which is the seventh biggest army in the world. I have my own State Department, much to Foggy Bottom’s annoyance. We have the United Nations in New York, and so we have an entree into the diplomatic world that Washington does not have,” Mayor Bloomberg said.

8. Until OWS, he was unbeatable. Now, he's hunkered down and scared. Keep up the pressure on the li'l
President of Wall Street.

To think I used to kinda, well sorta, grudgingly admire the guy. Is there a quick antidote for minor Kool-Aid poisoning?

12. "I have my own army"
Does not sound scared. It sounds like a boastful response to the age old question "you and what army".

A comfortable retirement on a Mediterranean Isle with his mistress. But, no more Imperial pretension - not from him, anyway. That crown got passed.

18. Ah. But who
will stand up to him? The Kochs? Not sure that's better.

I'm feeling a mite bit pessimistic after they evicted yet another Occupy last night, in LA, and watching how even in the current crisis, I see RW governments winning or gaining strength. "There's No Strength Left in the World of Men". Or at least, not in the West.

23. I think the next few years are going to be very tough on incumbents.
Particularly those that have been straddling fences, and don't have a real, solid popular base to keep them in office. Money only buys so many elections before even the NYC electorate grow bored by the expensive spectacles and vote for change.

27. I think they will be
harder on citizens. Incumbents tend to have a cushion to relax on after leaving office. The rest of us rarely do.

In the mean time, the deep red areas seem to me to be the only solid bases out there. Blue areas feel the discontent, purple areas feel the discontent. Red areas seem to just blame and ignore and soldier on. I just don't see it getting better anytime soon.

21. He was vulnerable before OWS...the last election was very close.
But...OWS has really brought out all of his worst qualities (at the same time). And if this weren't his last term by law, it certainly would be after all this.

22. stupid arrogance rears its ugly dumass once again; courtesy of another banana republican du jour.
asshole may pretend he's kidding -- but wouldn't be a surprise, if he's airing his personal fascist fantasies in public. the NYPD might be his own bought & paid for with public taxes army. the rest of this shit only exists in his own demented dream life.

i'm surprised MIT kids let him get off on his own trash talk, scot free. i guess smart doesn't preclude worshipping wealthy.

31. It's pretty obvious he's never seen the U.S. Constitution, but, I guess he hasn't read "The Prince"
and what Machiavelli had to say about Private Armies, either.

"Machiavelli stands strongly against the use of mercenaries, and in this he was innovative, and he also had personal experience in Florence. He believes them useless to a ruler because they are undisciplined, cowardly, and without any loyalty, being motivated only by money. Machiavelli attributes the Italian city states’ weakness to their reliance on mercenary armies."

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prince

Man, a classical education sure isn't what it used to be.

32. It seems Karl Rove has some serious competition for the distinguished title of "turd-blossom."
That's the biggest problem with Bloomberg's mentality the NYPD is not his "own army" on two counts.

1. The NYPD is not his police; it belongs to the city and people of New York, in spite of his efforts to use it to squash the people's First Amendment Rights.

2. The police should never be confused with an army, Lord help us if Bloomberg ever came to power in the White House.

Thanks for the thread, Hissyspit.

33. Bloomburg's own private army ... ? !
The US Constitution established the federal government with the authority to govern ONLY so long as that government upheld the US Constitution and the rights of IndividuaL US Citizens guaranteed therein; NO entity of government in the US has the authority to use force to subvert those US Constitutional rights in an attempt to control US Citizens in order to maintain power over their dissent.
