University to pay medical bills of pepper spray victims
Source: CNN

University of California officials said Tuesday they will pay the medical expenses of students who were pepper sprayed during an Occupy Davis protest last week.

Authorities have also decided to drop charges against 10 people who were arrested during the Friday protest on the campus of UC Davis. The university system has also created an advisory panel to look into the incident, University of California President Mark Yudof said.

Bill Bratton, who has led police departments in Los Angeles, Boston and New York, will head the panel, Yudof said.

"My intent," Yudof said, "is to provide the chancellor and the entire University of California community with an independent, unvarnished report about what happened at Davis."

9. an expert on pepper spray says it can cause problems to the
cornea if sprayed enough and thick coating your face. One of the kids they interviewed said he still had blurred vision and that is the side affect of this. DAMN!

My mom had a corneal transplant and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. THey need to sue against long term care.

13. I had a corneal transplant and wouldn't curse anyone with one
Oh, I'm deeply grateful to be seeing out of that eye after total blindness for years. However, the operation is a big deal and the recovery period is six months of horrible discomfort.

4. That will require a civil suit. I'm sure that can be arranged.
Since they were on duty, working for the University, the first responsibility lies with the University. They can be sued, however, by each and every victim. And they should be.

3. A reasonable first step. Next step should be suspension or dismissal of the
two cops and the campus police chief.

5. No, taxpayers will pay the bill. Big fucking deal
This isn't good enough by half. The UC Davis Chancellor must quit, and all of those cops must be fired, arrested, and prosecuted to the highest extent the law allows.

7. An attempt
...to avoid and/or lower law suit amounts and to defuse student anger. Will they also pay for psychological therapy?

This is strategic, to nip in the bud, the outrage and symbolism of the police crime, and is not driven by a genuine sense of morality.

18. $20 to the local food bank says that the students in question
will be required to sign paperwork to the effect that their acceptance of funds to pay their medical bills means they are unable to file suit against the school for continuing medical treatment.

You KNOW it's going to happen.

That's how they avoid getting sued.

15. Put that fat-headed slug
Out on the rock pile at San Quentin. And I don't consider police unions part of the progressive/labor movement. 90% of them are republicans anyway.

16. Police have never been the friends of the progressive/labor movement.
The police long ago learned that unionizing can be beneficial to their own job security, but they share none of the values that other progressive/labor organizations share. They have always been the tools of the powerful and elite, used to impose their will on the otherwise unwilling.
