Texas town still suffers effects of heat, drought; water supply down to two weeks
Source: CNN

The Texas town of Groesbeck is on the verge of running dry.

"We have about two weeks of water left," Groesbeck Mayor Jackie Levingston said. Her central Texas town, population 4,300, is one of the latest victim's of the state's ongoing drought.

A lack of rain and the summer's intense heat -- more than 90 days of triple-digit temperatures -- combined to dry out the Groesbeck water supply.

"We lost more water to evaporation than we were using this summer," Levingston said in a telephone interview.

27. What an insensitive, bigoted, irrational remark
Do you realize how difficult it would be for some of us to move? My God, how hateful and rude.

If I have to move, I'll make sure to move to an area where there aren't people like you. I would want to live next to compassionate, friendly people. You are the exact opposite of that.

However, what you're saying is correct -- Global Warming is going to bring

tremendous dislocation -- for all of us --

Or, as the saying goes -- "We're all in the same boat and no way that only half

the boat is going down!"

8. ...AND THEY STILL VOTE REPUBLICAN!!!!!
They really don't know ANYTHING about science & they don't know much about the book written about the dead man they worship...But they "KNOW" Jesus will be returning from the dead (...most their lifetime) to save them & kill the rest of us who either worship another deity or us SECULARIST LIBERALS!

...And then spend eternity with JEEZUSS free from LIBERAL SCUM!

It is really SAD to watch but for me the pity evaporates quickly knowing they vote & they are the reason these FREAKS in Congress are holding the rest of us back from entering the 21st Century in a nation that LEADS by example not with force!

...Matter of fact I found myself cussing the TV or You Tube videos or news articles in anger & I use to take things in stride...I am just in the state of utter confusion at how so many Americans adhere to the Republican way of thinking! Most of those simply cannot afford to continue voting Repug but they have know idea what is going on because all they know is FOX "News" or Talk Radio! FUUUCKK!!

35. Well, the difference is we have Dallas and Austin and San Antonio
With a very diverse population...lots of IT jobs and telecom brings in lots of different folks from around the World.

In Dallas for example-
28.8% non-Hispanic white,
24.6% non-Hispanic black,
0.4% Hispanic black,
0.7% Native American,
2.9% Asian (0.6% Indian, 0.5% Chinese, 0.5% Vietnamese, 0.3% Korean, 0.2% Burmese, 0.2% Filipino),
0.2% non-Hispanic from some other race,
2.6% from two or more races
42.4% Hispanic or Latino. Among the Hispanic population, 36.7% of Dallas is Mexican, 1.3% Salvadoran, 0.6% Honduran, 0.4% Guatemalan, and 0.3% Puerto Rican.<117><118>

You've got, Atlanta-
Black or African American: 54.0%
White: 38.4% (Non-Hispanic Whites: 36.3%)
Asian: 3.1%
Native American: 0.2%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: 0.0%
Some other race: 2.2%
Two or more races: 2.0%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race): 5.3%

Also, while I won't dispute the fact that as you leave the big cities and get to areas like say, Crawford TX the stupid goes up exponentially. The difference is most of them in Texas are true rednecks. You have a different breed there in Georgia where you are starting to cross into hillbilly which is a unique type of stupid

36. And HOUSTON

During the 2008 Presidential election all of our largest cities/counties were won by Obama (except for 'one', McCain won Ft. Worth)

Obama won: Houston/Harris, Austin/Travis, Dallas/Dallas, El Paso, San Antonio, etc.

It's time to turn our 'purple' state 'blue' :)

12. What's up with the Texas bashing on this thread?
If the same thing happened in California and the FReepers were all like "This is what they deserve for voting Democrat" we'd all be pissed, so why is this acceptable when the shoe is on the other foot?

(News flash: there are counties in Texas that are more solidly blue than San Francisco.)

26. Couple of things that need to be addressed here
First, thanks for inviting us to leave Texas. I would have to say I actually would like to leave. However, many of us have responsibilities here, in my case, I can't leave my elderly mother and my wife's elderly grandmother. My wife and I are responsible for them because we are the only ones who live in the same community as them.

Secondly, I have looked at retirement to a very temperate climate like San Diego. Texas summers are brutal, and I would love to live in a comfortable climate. But my God, the cost of living is unreal there. My wife and I would have a difficult time on our state's pensions living in a decent, one bedroom apartment.

Third, I would have to argue that there are more people coming from out of state to Texas rather than California. I say this because of our low cost of living. It's been going on for years. My wife's family transplanted from Minnesota. I have more neighbors on my street from out of state rather than Texas. The DFW area has always been full of out of staters because of jobs and the low cost of living.

Fourth, and last, since we're going anecdotal here. Most people who come here from other states remark on how friendly the natives are here and they don't want to leave. You say Texans are not nice in California, but I have to say the transplants here are very friendly, and I believe it's because they follow the lead of the natives. I had a friend go to New York City, and he walked into a shop. He bought something, and the salesperson asked, "You're from Texas, aren't you?" My friend said yes, and remarked that he guess it was because of his accent. The salesperson said no, because he had manners and was friendly. I live in a very red area, and politically I am an outsider. But I still love the people here, the Tex-Mex food, and the general friendliness. This is not a bad state, and we're working hard to change the political climate.

30. Thank you for this
When I went to Texas, everyone was very nice and very polite.

(Short story: I went into a store and there were "sleeping Mexican" statues there, and I overheard one VERY Texan looking woman say to another VERY Texan looking woman "I think that's racist, don't you?" :D )

15. Not from all.
Just from some. And carefully selected.

Some "liberals" are also horrible employers. Some of the snarkiest and most repressive employer-employee relations I've seen were from proudly progressive employers completely oblivious of the mismatch between their verbiage and actions.

Just as some Xians tend to regard their faith as some kind of inoculation against "sin" and behaving badly while constituting justification for ridiculing and being condescending to others, so some liberals believe their values mean they can never act inhumanely and have a right to sit in judgment of others.

Left or right, we're still people. (At least according to me. Both left and right have people that would vehemently deny that the others are people, even as they revel in their compassion and humaneness. You can be offended or find it amusing. I'm not Queen Victoria. "We" are amused, and easily so.)

18. Man, I hate this. And still in the clutches of frackers and other polluters. Time for progressives
To take back Texas. It's a matter of survival, on the plainest terms. Texas wasn't always the way it's been since Ann Richards lost to the Shrub. In some ways, it can never recover, but this might give a push to those who are still fighting the regressives. Best wishes, folks.

20. It was a very brutal summer, guys......
...brutal as hell! I felt like a prisoner in my home, and I have lived here all my life. The water situation is getting better as colder weather moves south causing more rain. I was surprised to see Groesbeck was low on water. I guess they only use surface water for drinking. I got a 2.5 inch rain Monday, the first such rain since early June, although we did an inch last week. Watering ponds for livestock are still dangerously low or dry. Trucks are shipping cattle northward daily because there is no hay supply for the winter here due to the drought.

The lake here where I live is still very low and we are hoping for winter moisture to fill it back up. It's so dry that it takes 2 inches of rain to soak the ground, so if we get less than that, there is no run-off, and the lakes keep dropping. I have confidence we'll fill the lake before next summer. It always does.
