Egyptian activist poses nude, inciting furor

(AP) CAIRO - A woman activist who posted nude pictures of herself on her blog to protest limits on free expression has triggered an uproar in Egypt, drawing condemnations from conservatives and liberals alike.

Some liberals feared that the posting by 20-year-old university student Aliaa Magda Elmahdy would taint them in the eyes of deeply conservative Egyptians ahead of Nov. 28 parliamentary elections in which they are trying to compete with fundamentalist Islamic parties.

Nudity is strongly frowned upon in Egyptian society, even as an art form. Elmahdy's posting is almost unheard of in a country where most women in the Muslim majority wear the headscarf and even those who don't rarely wear clothes exposing the arms or legs in public....

The boob presented to a newborn is the opposite of flabby. It's full to bursting with milk and badly in need of a hungry infant to relieve the pressure.

and for the record, not all women's breasts are "bursting with milk" on the day of delivery. Let me school you on some simple anatomy truth: it take a few days for the colostrum to leave the breast and for the milk supply to establish.

9. The nude female body can be soooo powerful. This photo will electrify

the election (for better or worse). She's extremely brave and I sincerely hope she knows what she's doing.

I am a fierce advocate for women's rights in the public square. Actions that advance the cause of women and their rights get a huge thumbs up from me. I am not on the ground in Egypt, I have no idea how this will play out but I want to applaud the action of a young activist who isn't afraid to go to any lengths to honestly challenge the status quo in Egypt (which right now is to keep women as second class citizens!)

ETA: I LOVE the photography! All black and white except for the red flower and the red shoes - probably the only things a "proper" Egyptian woman is allowed to typically display. Her colorizing of the only two aspects of "femininity" that would be publicly permitted is a stunning use of drama in this otherwise drab photo (not diminishing her fine form, just saying the gray/white scale is obviously purposeful).
