Germans given a £5bn tax-cut 'thank you' over eurozone crisis

Angela Merkel said last night that her government has agreed to give Germans tax breaks worth £5.1billion, as thanks for the burden they have had to carry during Europe’s debt crisis.

The German Chancellor said an agreement was reached among her Christian Democrats and their centre-right coalition partners that the six billion euros worth of cuts would be introduced in two stages.

They would start in January 2013 with £1.7billion of cuts. The second step is scheduled for January 2014 and will be worth £3.4billion.
