Gearing up at the Bohemian Grove
Source: The Press Democrat

San Francisco Giants' boss Bill Neukom and Vaughn Walker, the retired federal judge who threw out Proposition 8, will be among the featured speakers at the Bohemian Grove encampment of rich and powerful men beginning Friday in Monte Rio.

Also scheduled to present Lakeside Talks during the 17-day Bohemian Grove retreat are Daniel Yergin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and energy expert; Willie Smits, a conservationist and defender of Borneo's orangutans; and former Secretaries of State George Shultz and James Baker, according to a source.

The talks, presented beside a small lake ringed by towering redwoods, are a daily highlight of the summer encampment held by the San Francisco-based Bohemian Club and dating back to 1878.

Like everything else that transpires within the Bohemians' 2,700-acre enclave along the Russian River, the talks are secret, to the chagrin of critics who contend the plutocrats and politicians are either plotting the future of the free world, engaging in nefarious ceremonies or both.

1. I hear that they run around nude
there while worshiping an owl. Alex Jones supposedly got some footage there several years ago. If anyone films any nude cavorting involving George Schultz or James Baker, I hope I never see it.

12. I have had that book on my "to read" list forever...
I read his "men who stare at goats" and really enjoy his writing. He also does contributions to "This American Life" as well.

I think I will pick it up this week for some good reading at the beach next week.

Cheers!

They have plenty of opportunities to plan the downfall of the peons, Bohemian Grove is more of a vacation from planing our destruction

9. Best Thing I Ever Read on Bohemian Grove
was Masters of the Universe Go to Camp in Spy Magazine. Written by someone who actually sneaked in, blended with the VIPs, and attended many of the festivities. Written in 1989, but it holds true today.

Would be a great idea for a movie. I can imagine the never-ending sequels.

20. Seriously, Check That Article Out
It's amazing. Some locals showed the reporter how to jump the fence. He walked right in and pretended to be a guest. Even chatted with Ronald Reagan, who admitted to a secret political deal the author asked him about. And it has that inimitable Spy Magazine blend of acerbic wit and insight.

14. Clarence Thomas attended the Bohemian Grove, the guest of a rich Texan.
Justice Thomas reported a wealth of gifts

In the last six years he has accepted free items valued at $42,200, the most on the high court.

December 31, 2004|Richard A. Serrano and David G. Savage | Times Staff Writers

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has accepted tens of thousands of dollars worth of gifts since joining the high court, including $1,200 worth of tires, valuable historical items and a $5,000 personal check to help pay a relative's education expenses.

SNIP...

He also took a free trip aboard a private jet to the exclusive Bohemian Grove club in Northern California -- arranged by a wealthy Texas real estate investor who helped run an advocacy group that filed briefs with the Supreme Court.

Those and other gifts were disclosed by Thomas under a 1978 federal ethics law that requires high-ranking government officials, including the nine Supreme Court justices, to file a report each year that lists gifts, money and other items they have received.

Thomas has reported accepting much more valuable gifts than his Supreme Court colleagues over the last six years, according to their disclosure forms on file at the court.
