Gillard quizzed on magnets, Aussie rock

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has used a radio interview in Darwin to assure listeners that she's a woman with a social conscience.

ABC breakfast show host Richard "Margo" Margetson on Thursday morning asked Ms Gillard to select an Australian song to play on air, expecting her to request a Skyhooks classic.

Instead, she chose Midnight Oil.

"I'm going with my minister - Peter Garrett's up here with me doing a great job on school education - and the song I've picked is Blue Sky Mining," Ms Gillard said.

Excellent choice by the PM, though I still favor Beds Are Burning.

In case you didn't know: Peter Garrett, the bald bloke, lead singer of Midnight Oil, is now our Education Minister. I fail to understand why Americans are reluctant to elect creative, artistic types to public office. (Mr Franken is a great example of why you should.)
