US anti-war activists hit by secret airport ban
By Andrew Gumbel in Los Angeles
03 August 2003

After more than a year of complaints by some US anti-war activists that they were being unfairly targeted by airport security, Washington has admitted the existence of a list, possibly hundreds or even thousands of names long, of people it deems worthy of special scrutiny at airports.

The list had been kept secret until its disclosure last week by the new US agency in charge of aviation safety, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). And it is entirely separate from the relatively well-publicised "no-fly" list, which covers about 1,000 people believed to have criminal or terrorist ties that could endanger the safety of their fellow passengers.

The strong suspicion of such groups as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which is suing the government to try to learn more, is that the second list has been used to target political activists who challenge the government in entirely legal ways. The TSA acknowledged the existence of the list in response to a Freedom of Information Act request concerning two anti-war activists from San Francisco who were stopped and briefly detained at the airport last autumn and told they were on an FBI no-fly list.

The activists, Rebecca Gordon and Jan Adams, work for a small pacifist magazine called War Times and say they have never been arrested, let alone have criminal records. Others who have filed complaints with the ACLU include a left-wing constitutional lawyer who has been strip-searched repeatedly when travelling through US airports, and a 71-year-old nun from Milwaukee who was prevented from flying to Washington to join an anti-government protest.

3. This is too much! If Dem. candidates doesn't jump on this then they
have no morals and/or are really all just part of the Secret Government. And what is the IRS doing? How many people are the FBI placing illegal items into the passengers luggage so that they can arrested?

I can't believe this story! If true Bush should be Impeached!

Lost In Translation
Edmonds says that the supervisor, in an effort to slow her down, went so far as to erase completed translations from her FBI computer after she'd left work for the day.

“The next day I would come to work, turn on my computer and the work would be gone. The translation would be gone,” she says. “Then I had to start all over again and retranslate the same document. And I went to my supervisor and he said, ‘Consider it a lesson and don't talk about it to anybody else and don't mention it.’”

Did The FBI Destroy Evidence?
The FBI and prosecutors ordered the destruction in 1999 of evidence from a bank robbery they once suspected linked Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh to white supremacists who were threatening before McVeigh's bombing to attack the government, documents show.

The evidence included a surveillance videotape of a bank robbery by some of the supremacists that occurred in Ohio five months before the bombing. The FBI lab compared the tape to pictures of McVeigh, but concluded a match was "inconclusive," internal memos show.

4. I Just Wrote the Dean Campaign
Sent the following email:
Friendly suggestion from a two-time contributor:

US anti-war activists hit by secret airport ban

After more than a year of complaints by some US anti-war activists that they were being unfairly targeted by airport security, Washington has admitted the existence of a list, possibly hundreds or even thousands of names long, of people it deems worthy of special scrutiny at airports. (snip)

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=430073

I think Dr. Dean can help to blow the whistle on this illegal practice which was directed against Republicans as well as Democrats.

It can put the Bush administration on the defensive if handled in the right way. The administration looks bad when charged with deception. Publicizing this practice can weaken Bush and help insure Dean's election.

Thanks for your consideration.

Our peace rallies and vigils are always videotaped by one or more person.. Monday, we protested at a Cheney fundraiser. We were videotaped by at least four different people that I saw. We were videotaped by the Secret Service.

My advice - Smile for the camera!

Don't let them make you afraid. That is what they want to do.

fair elections in 2004? HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They'll NEVER let that happen. Forget Dean, Kucinich, Kerry, forget them all because the 2000 right wing revolution will not voluntarily allow it...

We're all acting like we're going to beat the FI (fucking idiot) at the polls next year. Everyone wants to think we're not living under a revolutionary right wing goverment. Free elections are not held in countries that have been overthrown.

Sorry, but I'm in a pissy mood right now since I read the thread in GD about somebody's credentials being revoked at a conference of elections administrators. The revoked credentials belonged to someone advocating a paper trail of ballots.

18. This is old news
This was first reported last year. I have an entry about it already in my 9/11 Timeline:

March 2002: Beginning at least by this time, some political activists begin noticing they are being subjected to extra surveillance and security checks when flying in the US. Numerous government agencies later admit they are using a "no fly" list that bans certain people from flying. The government says about 1,000 names are on the list. It is also admitted that there is a second list that subjects anyone on it to increased security every time they fly. A number of agencies, including the CIA, FBI, INS, and State Department, admit that they have added names to such lists, but no agency admits controlling the list. There are no guidelines to determine who gets on the lists and no procedures for getting off a list if someone is wrongfully on it. Airport security personnel note that the lists seem to be netting mostly priests, elderly nuns, Green Party campaign operatives, left-wing journalists, right-wing activists, and people affiliated with Arab or Arab-American groups. (San Francisco Chronicle, 9/27/02, Salon, 11/15/02)

---

The Independent is acting as if they just discovered the story. There seems to be a lot of forgetfulness of what's been reported these days. At least the Independent adds a few new details. But the story has been around a long time and not deemed important, unfortunately.

22. covering the story
I'm all in favor of the Independent reporting on this. The more coverage, the better. I'm just pointing out that because it's already been reported in the US, it's less likely to catch fire as a big story. Only the SF Chronicle (cos it's a "local" story with lots of SF activists being arrested) and Salon (cos they're liberal). Sad.

24. Here lies the problem...
While it's fine to have a "Do Not Fly List"--you don't wan't to allow an undocumented alien from Saudi Arabia on the plane, or somebody for whom their is a standing arrest warrant for a violent crime--the potential for abuse is tremendous. This is why the FBI and CIA lost many of the powers and privilleges of their agencies in the 1970's, They abused them. Much like an elementary school child who abuses his privillges, they get taken away to teach him a lesson. If people are on that list, they ought to have the right to due process of law to get off that list. And placing people on the list because of political activites is just downright Nixonian. How would conseravtives feel if President Hillary Rodham Clinton demanded all anti-abortion activists, or Campus Crusade for Christ activists be put on the list?
