Sarah Palin defends her take on Paul Revere's ride
Source: USA Today

"I didn't mess up," the potential GOP presidential candidate said this morning on Fox News Sunday. "I answered candidly and I know my American history."

"He warned the Americans that the British were coming, the British were coming, that we 've got to make sure we were protecting ourselves and shoring up all of our ammunitions and firearms so that they couldn't take it," Palin said.

The website for the Paul Revere House in Boston has an account of what happened the night of April 18, 1775. It explains that Revere was instructed to ride from Boston to Lexington to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that "British troops were marching to arrest them."

The Paul Revere House also says the rider warned "the regulars are coming out" and didn't say "the British are coming."

"I haven't interpreted it's about me," she said. "It's been about the message."

1. OK, Sarah, take me on in an American history version of Jeopardy.
Since I won the award in law school way back when for best student of the Constitution, you may have some work before you.

Actually, anyone here at DU would wipe the floor with her.

19. I'll take Pat Riots for $400 Alex
Following the Sarah Palin playbook of never admitting error, the ex-governor’s minions are busy flooding the Internet with ’proof’ that Palin did not misspeak when suggesting that Paul Revere warned the British that they would not be taking arms from the colonists during his ride where he, apparently, rung bells and fired muskets.

3. "He who warned, uh, the British that they weren't gonna be takin' away our arms"
Oh bullshit!

She said, "He who warned, uh, the British that they weren't gonna be takin' away our arms, uh, by ringing those bells, and um, makin' sure as he's riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be sure and we were going to be free, and we were going to be armed,"

She is so fucking stupid, that lanterns were lit in a bell-tower becomes Paul Revere ridin' hard and ringin' bells (to warn the British)

What actually happened:

The Real Story of Revere's Ride

In 1774 and the Spring of 1775 Paul Revere was employed by the Boston Committee of Correspondence and the Massachusetts Committee of Safety as an express rider to carry news, messages, and copies of resolutions as far away as New York and Philadelphia.

On the evening of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere was sent for by Dr. Joseph Warren and instructed to ride to Lexington, Massachusetts, to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were marching to arrest them. After being rowed across the Charles River to Charlestown by two associates, Paul Revere borrowed a horse from his friend Deacon John Larkin. While in Charlestown, he verified that the local "Sons of Liberty" committee had seen his pre-arranged signals. (Two lanterns had been hung briefly in the bell-tower of Christ Church in Boston, indicating that troops would row "by sea" across the Charles River to Cambridge, rather than marching "by land" out Boston Neck. Revere had arranged for these signals the previous weekend, as he was afraid that he might be prevented from leaving Boston).

On the way to Lexington, Revere "alarmed" the country-side, stopping at each house, and arrived in Lexington about midnight. As he approached the house where Adams and Hancock were staying, a sentry asked that he not make so much noise. "Noise!" cried Revere, "You'll have noise enough before long. The regulars are coming out!" After delivering his message, Revere was joined by a second rider, William Dawes, who had been sent on the same errand by a different route. Deciding on their own to continue on to Concord, Massachusetts, where weapons and supplies were hidden, Revere and Dawes were joined by a third rider, Dr. Samuel Prescott. Soon after, all three were arrested by a British patrol. Prescott escaped almost immediately, and Dawes soon after. Revere was held for some time and then released. Left without a horse, Revere returned to Lexington in time to witness part of the battle on the Lexington Green.

18. There you go again .... you liberal who reads the .......
.... lame stream media quoting her word for word and not understanding what she really meant was the following;

She explained that the British army had been in Massachusetts for some time and that there wasn't
just one midnight ride. And she insisted that part of Revere's message was the symbolism that revolutionaries
were ready to fight. :wow: Oh O.K..

But she said something different than that and it was taken out of context by people who are out to get her w/ her own words.

BTW although I detest the man, Roger Ailes, he is own record that he is done w/ her because she just doesn't know when to
shut the hell up I have to agree w/ him on Ms. Palin.

20. Here's More Writeup
And it explains that "regulars" was shorthand for British regular army as was "are coming" meant they had started moving, in this case the two laterns meant across the Charles River. (No ringing bells to be found anywhere). Following writeup comes from Wikipedia.

"The British army (the King's "regulars") had been stationed in Boston since the ports were closed in the wake of the Boston Tea Party, and was under constant surveillance by Revere and other patriots as word began to spread that they were planning a move. On the night of April 18, 1775, the army began its move across the Charles River toward Lexington, and the Sons of Liberty immediately went into action. At about 11 pm, Revere was sent by Warren across the Charles River to Charlestown, on the opposite shore, where he could begin a ride to Lexington, while Dawes was sent the long way around, via the Boston Neck and the land route to Lexington.

In the days before April 18, Revere had instructed Robert Newman, the sexton of the Old North Church, to send a signal by lantern to alert colonists in Charlestown as to the movements of the troops when the information became known. In what is well known today by the phrase "one if by land, two if by sea", one lantern in the steeple would signal the army's choice of the land route, while two lanterns would signal the route "by water" across the Charles River.<7> This was done to get the message through to Charlestown in the event that both Revere and Dawes were captured. Newman and Captain John Pulling momentarily held two lanterns in the Old North Church as Revere himself set out on his ride, to indicate that the British soldiers were in fact crossing the Charles River that night. Revere rode a horse lent to him by John Larkin, Deacon of the Old North Church."

105. With all due respect to wiki, while it has been widely accepted that Newman was the one who
Edited on Mon Jun-06-11 05:22 AM by No Elephants
hung the lanterns, that has never been proven. We do know, I think from Revere's own deposition, that he asked three people to take care of that, one of them being Newman.

"Paul Revere told three Boston patriots to hang two lanterns in the steeple. These men were the church sexton Robert John Newman, and Captain John Pulling, the two of whom David Hackett Fischer suggests each carried one lantern up to the steeple, and Thomas Bernard, who stood watch for British troops outside the church."

(Also from wiki, but the wiki of Old North Church. )

The Revere House account fudges by using the passive voice. The Old North Church account favors its sexton.

Every year around April 19, an actor plays Paul Revere at the Revere House and gives the account. Later, actors representing British troops are seen near Old North Church. Soon after that, a special service is held in Old North Church. Many arrive in 18th Century dress. "Revere" leaves on horseback. (You can also see him the next morning on horseback, either in Charlestown or near the Revere House.) One or more descendants of Newman climb into the steeple with lanterns.

It's really neat. I highly recommend it.

55. She always ends up sounding like Miss South Carolina
Edited on Sun Jun-05-11 01:47 PM by tblue37
explaining why we need to provide maps for all those disadvantaged South African, Asian, and Iraqi children so that somehow that will make it easier for American students to find the US on a map, which will then "build up our "future, for us":
Miss South Carolina Lauren Caitlin Upton:
“I personally believe, that U.S. Americans,
are unable to do so,
because uh,
some, people out there, in our nation don’t have maps.
and uh…
I believe that our education like such as in South Africa,
and the Iraq,
everywhere like such as…
and, I believe they should uh,
our education over here,
in the U.S. should help the U.S.
or should help South Africa,
and should help the Iraq and Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future,
for us.”
Same sort of word salad. BTW, this is the question Miss South Carolina was supposed to be answering:
Recent polls have shown that a fifth of Americans can’t locate the US on a world map. Why do you think this is?
Sarah's response to pretty much any question always ends up sounding like Miss SC's answer.

5. American History for Dummies
So let me recap: on camera she re-writes history with her version of Paul Revere's ride. Then she re-writes history to Fox News about her reciting of such an absurd and uninformed version of American history.

Somebody tell the half-term governor that clear-thinking people (not her cult followers) do not need her to explain herself---we hear her ignorance and arrogance loud and clear.

The hero-worship of dimwits like this is the downfall of America.

During one of the debates against Kerry, Bush was asked about any mistakes he had made during his first term. He look perplexed, then answered, "Give me a couple of minutes and I'm sure I'll think of one."

Later, the only error Bush would admit to was relying on the bad intelligence information he was getting to make the decision whether to attack Iraq.

b) They were no Americans 1775 but British subjects living in the Colonies ...... The American as
a citizen concept was not real until July 4th 1776 ..... you know Independence Day.

to explain how she had just eaten a burger and that Heinz 57 ketchup had her thinking about how lucky America was that John Kerry never became President.

A mispoken number, such as your example from the President, is not the same as Sarah's ramble full of numerous errors and in total just wrong history. Then she makes stuff up to "fix" it! She's made plenty of one word screw-ups, as everyone does from time to time. I don't think anyone doubts the President knows how many states there are, although there were plenty of comments and jokes about it. Imagine Sarah dealing with world leaders...

111. Not really. That was a true slip of the tongue. I'd bet my home Obama, who was born in the 50th
and last so far state, then one of 100 Senators--two from each state--and then running in primaries knew the U.S. had 50 states. And would never have defended his statement about 57 states as true.

I'd also bet my home Sarah believed everything she said was true when she said it.

And I rarely bet anything over $1.00.

“Sarah blames her "previous answer" about Paul Revere on the media, saying it was a "gotcha" question.

Poor Sarah. The media is always asking her "gotcha" questions, trying to trip her up, like What books and magazines do you read? Other "gotcha" questions they've tried to ask Sarah before her handlers intervened :

What state were you born in?
What color are your eyes?
Who was the first president?

Adams and Hancock were British.
See. Sarah WAS right.

Of course Sarah doesn't understand that the Brits were revolting against the Brits.
And that she just said Revere was a traitor to the revolution come who warned Crown Sympathizers that the Crown's army of Red Coats were coming.
And for that matter probably thinks the Brits that perpetrated the Boston tea party wore seep through Lipton tea bags from their hats and had six shooters strapped to their thighs.

66. Even though every time Palin opens her mouth it is comedy gold. Episodes like these are frightening
She is obviously not only your run of the milll moron, but an uneducated, intellectually lazy, dimwitted jackass who doesn't even know the history basics of the nation she has lived in all her life and of which SHE ALMOST BECOME VICE-PRESIDENT. Think about that for just a couple of seconds, and what that does imply. And there are plenty of people who not only support her but defend her as a perfectly viable candidate to lead this country.

Further, her inability to even compute that she could possibly be wrong leads me to believe that besides her cognitive handicap, she is either a true narcissist or a barely functional sociopath. Or a combination of both.

Unfortunately Palin and her rise to prominency shines a mirror on our society that many are missing and which frightens me. ;-( I don't think I can laugh at this idiot any more...

71. Did the colonists even have that many guns and firearms?
I'm not sure where I once read that many of the revolutionaries fought with tools, farm implements, hatchets, swords, makeshifts bayonets as well as guns and muskets. I just googled some articles about Revolutionary War muskets and they sound like the devil to load and shoot as well as being inaccurate as hell. I think I'd rather have a good pick axe on me if someone was coming at me in those days than stand there fumbling with musket balls and gunpowder and trying to jam it all in.

100. Interesting side stories here.
Yes, the colonists had muskets, several colonies got stockpiles to defend against "Indian Raids", and to be part of the local militia (non-regular army, which is why Revere was warning about the "regulars"). A good pick-axe isn't very helpful against a bow and arrow.

Of course everyone there was a British citizen at the time so technically you might say she was correct.

But sending his warning shots and ringing his bells doesn't quite capture the stealth atmosphere of his ride.

What Palin's base does prize - and what they reward - is rude, crude sass and attitude, doubling down when lame-streamers play the Fact Card. She knows her crowd is a viral movement of Xsto-fascist Berzerkers with ammo, serpent flags and an appetitite for chaos. They'll giggle as they drag this country into the dustbin of history quicker than than you can 'White Fox on Koch'.

104. Paul Revere never rang any bells, ya ding dong. No one did. Someone hung lanterns in the steeple.
Edited on Mon Jun-06-11 05:10 AM by No Elephants
We think it may have been the church sexton. but no one can be 100% sure.

As for what Revere said, the actor who plays Paul Revere at the Revere House says Revere never would have said, "Tthe British are coming," because the colonists considered themselves British, which makes sense.

As to what Paulie actually said, with all due respect to the Revere House, which I love. no one can possibly know. The audiotape has been lost. (j/k. but you get my point.)

The shot heard round the world was fired the next day.

Amazing how selectively Sarah recast what she said.

Good thing the media call her on crap like that.

Oh, wait, they never do.

124. I hate to defend Palin but she isn't that wrong on this..
Revere was captured and questioned by the British soldiers at gunpoint. He told them of the army's movement from Boston, and that British army troops would be in some danger if they approached Lexington, because of the large number of hostile militia gathered there. Everything Revere told his British captors had a single goal, to move the soldiers away from Lexington, where he had left Hancock and Adams. Revere had reason to believe the patrol's mission was to arrest the two Patriot leaders. He and other captives taken by the patrol were still escorted east toward Lexington, until about a half mile from Lexington they heard a gunshot. The British major demanded Revere explain the shot, and Revere replied it was a signal to "alarm the country". A few minutes later, came a flurry of shots that seemed to alarm the British captors even beyond the panic they were already in. As the group drew closer to Lexington, the town bell began to clang rapidly, to which one of the captives proclaimed to the British soldiers "The bell's a'ringing! The town's alarmed, and you're all dead men!"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Revere#.22Midnight_Ride.22

The media are just as dumb for not doing its research on Paul Revere. If the current media existed back then they would've defended the British and called Paul Revere "anti-government" or a terrorist.
