Share of Population on Food Stamps Grows in Most States
Source: wsj

The share of residents turning to food stamps has risen in nearly every state nationwide in the past year even as unemployment has moderated.

After a temporary plateau in February, the number of Americans receiving food stamps ticked up again in March. Nearly 44.6 million received food stamps in March, up more than 11% from the same time a year ago, the Department of Agriculture said Tuesday.

The share of the population receiving food stamps nationwide has also risen as households struggle with high unemployment and stagnant wages. Some 14.4% of Americans relied on food stamps in March, up 1.4 percentage points from a year earlier.

All but three states reported a larger share of the population relying on food stamps compared to March 2010. And those states that saw the largest increases in recipiency were scattered across the country.

2. Don't worry, this too will end,
just as soon as the GOP gets enough power to eliminate food stamps.

3. So, with a decrease of .3%, North Dakota is in the best shape?
And the number of people on food stamps still rose, but the population growth made the percentage drop a bit.

Good lord. That's horrible. Everyone might be off food stamps in a few years though, if the GOP need something else to cover their third or fourth mortgages.

5. We have a choice. Either we use government money to pay for food stamps and unemployment benefits
Or we use that money to actually provide people jobs.

6. Food stamps go to a lot of people who cannot work: disabled, elderly
and those who are taking care of a disabled person in their home. More jobs would help lower the number of people on food stamps but it cannot replace the program.

7. That is true.
The point I was making is that by cutting back on investment and letting all our jobs get sent overseas, the government is still going to have to spend a lot of money taking care of the newly jobless.

9. With my horrible salary I know I qualify for Section 8 housing
Maybe even food stamps. How many people ARE working full time and would still qualify? Imagine the numbers with those working low paying, or part time jobs?

10. This has to be a lie - there's no way that the food stamp situation
could be worse under Obama than it was under Bush. The right-wing media must have made all this shit up. In reality, things are much better under Obama, aren't they?
