Crew subdues man banging on cockpit during flight
Source: Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Crew members and passengers wrestled a 28-year-old man to the cabin floor after he began pounding on the cockpit as an American Airlines flight approached San Francisco, the third security incident in a day on U.S. planes, authorities said Monday.

The man was yelling unintelligibly as he brushed past a flight attendant about 10 minutes before American Airlines Flight 1561 was due at San Francisco International Airport Sunday night, Sgt. Michael Rodriguez of the San Francisco police said.

A male flight attendant tackled the suspect, who carried a Yemen passport, and other crew members aided as the suspect banged on the cockpit door. "He asked for help; a couple of passengers joined in," Rodriguez told The Associated Press. "They were able to get him to ground and a flight attendant put him in plastic handcuffs."

The Boeing 737 carrying 162 people landed safely at 9:10 p.m. and the man was taken into police custody.

Another freak-out or a terrorist wanna-be trying to take down an airplane?

You know, crap like this is why we're going to be stuck with the stupid TSA grope-check and the funky TSA perv-check machines for a long while.

1. in england they stand 12 inches form your face and ask questions
before you get on the plane. they are trained to spot anxiety and deception. they have arches and they can tell how much money is in your pocket but the questioning is key. same in israel. a person could, theoretically, get on a plane unarmed and naked and then use items on the plane or tae kwon do to cause mayhem if they are a suicidal maniac. the questioning helps weed those out.

most of the bad behavior on airplanes has nothing to do with terrorism -- alcohol, claustrophobia, selfishness, extreme fatigue, tight spaces, back pain, and competition for limited resources. The instinct is 'fight or flight' and ironically there is no 'flight' on an airplane. there was an incident that forced an emergency landing where two men were fighting over the armrest between their seats. They were twins. accessing state of mind is key

6. completely agree
Taking the systematic approach like this, or how the Israel security does it should be how the TSA does it.

On a "the TSA security theater is worthless" story, one of the taekwondo masters of our region boarded a plane with his favorite weapon - a hooked cane. ADA rules say they can't stop him. A TSA agent even said, "You don't need that cane, do you?" "No, I don't." "Ok. Have a nice flight."

Being that I'll have a family of 5 soon, flying anywhere will be prohibitively expensive, so we'll drive it. No nude-o-scopes and no feeling up of my little girls, thank you very much.

3. It doesn't matter whether he was a freak-out or a terrorist wanna-be
His BEHAVIOR posed a danger to everyone on board.

4. This illustrates the stupidity of the TSA approach. All the nudie
scans and feel-ups in the world wouldn't have prevented this. It's what's going on inside a person's head that's most important. But since Chertoff isn't going to rake in the dough if well-trained security personnel are conducting interviews instead of poorly trained TSA pervs scanning and groping grandma and 6-year-olds, it's an approach the US will never take.

5. no shit
but one must still wonder why, considering the plane was in flight at the time of the incident. guess all the groping did no good.

8. Good for the crew and the passengers, protect yourself before the idiot puts everyone in harms way.
