Canada produces 58,300 jobs in April

Canada's unemployment rate slipped 0.1 percentage points in April to 7.6 per cent as the economy added 58,300 jobs, Statistics Canada reported Friday.

With the gain, full-time employment has returned to its level in October 2008, when the recession was starting.

Part-time work accounted for the bulk of the employment growth, with 41,100 positions added. About 17,200 full-time jobs were created last month.

April's job-creation numbers topped the 22,500 that economists had been expecting.

Now that George W. Harper has his blank check, I wouldn't bet a dime on that trend continuing for long.

1. Has there been the same big push to de-industrialize in Canada as there has in the US?

4. Dunno
To be perfectly honest, it's only since the New Democrats there have emerged as a political force that I've really been paying attention. Typical, I know. :(

6. We didn't have a subprime mortgage crisis here. Our economy tanked because
yours did.

8. Good jobs started bleeding away with nafta
and it continues on. Even Canada Post has just its outsourced its support staff to India, they gave the layoff notices just before the Easter holiday. Harper would love nothing better than to totally privatize it along with many other crown assets.

These new jobs are mostly part time with no benefits... more crappy service sector jobs. Can't get by on them, especially in the city without help of the food banks.

2. Sadly our elected officials have had to let our jobs go out of the
country because corporate ceo's say it's better for their business.... So we are dealing with a jobless recovery no matter how our American officials spin the dial.... But congrats Canada for keeping the people of your country employed... We in America are to busy looking tough....

3. Mr Bee, I tend to agree
Until now, I understand the Cons have been restrained by minority government. This fellow Harker now has free hand to do every stupid thing the Cons and neoCons, the neoliberals, the corporatists, etc. have done in the US.

7. Comparison
U.S. unemployment rate for March was 9.0%.
Canadian unemployment rate for March was 7.6%.

In March, the US created 658 jobs per million of population.
In March, Canada created 1791 jobs per million of population.

Now I wait to see all the weak, baseless excuses to explain why the US can't keep up with Canada.
