AP Source: Dodgers lack cash for May 31 payroll
Source: AP, via Yahoo!

NEW YORK – Major League Baseball believes the Los Angeles Dodgers do not have enough money to make their end of May payroll, a person familiar with the team's finances told The Associated Press.

The person spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity because MLB's investigation of the team's finances under owner Frank McCourt is ongoing. The Los Angeles Times first reported that the Dodgers lacked the cash to make their May 31 payroll.

The person said that if the Dodgers don't have the money, MLB would step in and make payroll.

"The fact that we had obligations coming due in 2011 was no surprise to us and no surprise to Major League Baseball," Dodgers owner Frank McCourt said in a statement to the AP.

1. let the owners dig deep
maybe take out a payday loan. I hear those places are great to deal with.

No taxpayer bailouts for professional sports, we do enough already.

3. yep, we're on the same page.
I'm sure the Dodgers do own their stadium but how often did they use eminent domain to grab the land?

I'm not arguing, just conversing.:toast:

5. This is 100% miss managing by that idot Mcourt
He deseverse to lose the franchise rifts if he doesn't have the money. The Dodgers are a big market team with not that large of a payroll. I wonder what the he'll he's waisting the money on.

8. I've been waiting for about two years for one of the sports franchises to shut down. I thought it
would occur in Detroit or one of the deindustrialized cities around the country due to dramatic decline in attendance. Working class people simply don't have the money to attend sporting events. But it looks like I was wrong and it was just good old fashioned greed that is taking down the Dodgers.

9. LET THEM FAIL! Enough of paying for stadiums with taxpayer dollars!
Recall that eminent domain was used to build the dodgers stadium too. Disgusting. :puke:

10. How in the holy hell can the doggers be in money trouble? They own Chavez Ravine
and Dodger Stadium outright FCOL. They keep all that dough. Shit, most of here could do pretty well offa the parking receipts.

11. How can a legendary franchise like the Dodgers fail in the #2 US market?
Jeezus, the mismanagement of the Dodgers is epic.

I'm not even a Dodger fan, but this bothers me.

Man, it's one of baseball's core franchises. I hope they get better owners and soon.
