Deaths and an Officer Wounded in Va.
Source: Associated Press

GRUNDY, Va. (AP) — Multiple people were shot and killed Sunday in southwestern Virginia and at least one deputy was wounded, state police said.

The deputy was shot near Grundy in Buchanan County, said state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller who said she was trying to confirm how many were killed and whether any were police officers.

Buchanan County emergency dispatchers told WVVA-TV that four officers were shot near the Devils Branch area near Grundy at about 3 p.m. and that one was killed, but state police could not confirm that.

VANSANT, Va. - State police say a gunman fatally shot two sheriff's deputies before being killed in a shootout along a rural southwestern Virginia road.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Steve Lowe says the deputies were shot about at 2 p.m. Sunday after the owner of a salvage yard reported a confrontation with a man he suspected of trying to rob his business. He says two other deputies have been injured and are in serious condition.

The Grundy, Va., sheriff's department confirmed earlier in the day that several of its deputies had been shot. It is a coal mining area with a population of about 1,100.

-----

Lowe says the deputies were shot from long range. The suspected shooter then fled into a wooded area in Buchanan County.

7. Is it? Or are we just hearing about it more?
What the media chooses to cover can greatly affect people's perceptions. For instance, you'd think that children are abducted left and right in the US. Actually, the number of non-family abductions by strangers in the US is about 150 a year.

Similarly, we might have the same number of police deaths, but they seem more visible because of some high profile incidents.

8. 4 deaths this weekend - to me it seems deaths are up
2 more this weekend besides the OP. Unfortunately 1 was friendly fire.

A veteran cop broke his neck and died Sunday after he was shoved from a Brooklyn stoop by a drunken ex-con during a domestic violence bust.

Officer Alain Schaberger toppled 9 feet over the railing of a Boerum Hill brownstone, pushed by George Villaneuva, a small-time crook who was threatening to kill his girlfriend, police said.

Schaberger, 42, landed head-first in the basement stairwell. He was rushed to Lutheran Hospital, where he died.

The MTA cop who shot and killed a plainclothes Long Island officer was inconsolable Sunday as he struggled to come to terms with the tragic friendly-fire incident, sources said.

Glenn Gentile is under investigation by Nassau County Police after he shot Geoffrey Breitkopf in the side moments after he arrived at a crime scene to offer backup, officials said.

Breitkopf, a 12-year veteran and married father of two, died a short while later in hospital.

9. Two sheriff's deputies killed in southwest Virginia
Source: WaPo

Two sheriff's deputies were fatally shot and two others were wounded Sunday in Buchanan County in far southwestern Virginia, state police said.

One of the wounded deputies appeared to be in critical condition, according to the state police.

The four deputies were all shot by a single assailant, who was later found dead, a state police spokeswoman said. It was not immediately clear Sunday night how he died or where he was found, and authorities were still working to confirm his identity.

The shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. when deputies were sent to a salvage yard in the Vansant community, where a larceny was reportedly in progress, state police said.

10. This is my home town.
According to relatives who work at the hospital and sheriff's department, two dead, two wounded.

One of the wounded is paralyzed from the waist down, and lost a kidney. He was in surgery last night at Holston Valley Medical in Kingsport.

12. Sounds like an ambush
Still too early to say but sounds like the shooter knew the officers were coming and sat in waiting for them. I wonder if he was the one who made the call to lure them out there or if he heard them coming and got into a position to attack them.

Terrible.
