21 priests in sex investigation suspended
Edited on Tue Mar-08-11 07:16 PM by mgc1961

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia archdiocese suspended 21 Roman Catholic priests Tuesday who were named as child molestation suspects in a scathing grand jury report released last month.

The priests have been removed from ministry while their cases are reviewed, Cardinal Justin Rigali said. The names of the priests were not being released, a spokesman for the archdiocese said.

"These have been difficult weeks since the release of the grand jury report," Rigali said in a statement. "Difficult most of all for victims of sexual abuse but also for all Catholics and for everyone in our community."

2. That's what I would like to know
The priests are protected by the archdiocese, but who is looking after the rights of the victims? That in itself should be a crime.

4. The fact that there was a Grand Jury
means that the "law" is preparing its case. So you generally get indictments out of the process and the suspects are then charged, etc. Then off to court.

3. Universities protect athlete rapists in the same way
I don't know of one division one athlete who has actually served time for rape and/or gang rape. It's always a suspended sentence or community service when found guilty. The universities guide whatever justice system involvement there is to protect their stars and the university's "good name."

And then there's the endless coach scandals.... esp male coaches of female teams who abuse their position of trust. These need to be as big a story as the Catholic Church priest cases, but they are well hidden out of the news and can only be gleaned, if at all, on a one by one basis.

5. I agree!
Lots of the "jocks" in high school raped the girls. This was widely known and was hopefully spread around the school as to who not to "date". It was sickening!

Class of '74 ... :puke:

6. i see the move on the part of the church
(suspending the 21 priests)as a move to limit their own liability.
it won't entirely erase that for sure but they are no longer moving priests around in attempt to hide the crimes.

8. When is the Pope going to change the celibacy requirement?
That would tend to cut down on child molesters...you'd get more "normal" men as priests.
