Famous Trade Union in Poland Shows Solidarity With Wisconsin Workers
February 25, 2011 Labor/Unions, Wisconsin, World No Comments

The word “Solidarity” is a heroic one in Poland. It was the solidarity movement at the ports of Gdansk and elsewhere in the Soviet-occupied country that helped bring down Communism in the late 1980s.

That same Solidarity movement has published a letter in solidarity with Wisconsin workers. Read the letter’s text below:

(Solidarity with Wisconsin rallies will be held tomorrow in all 50 U.S. States.)

To Public Service Workers in the State of Wisconsin

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

On behalf of the 700,000 members of the Polish Trade Union NSZZ
“Solidarnosc” (Solidarity) I wish to express our solidarity and support for your struggle against the recent assault on trade unions and trade union rights unleashed by Governor Scott Walker.

We are witnessing yet another attempt of transferring the costs of the economic crisis and of the failed financial policies to working people and their families. As much as some adjustments are necessary, we can not and must not agree that the austerity measures are synonymous with union-busting practices, the elimination of bargaining rights and the reduction of social benefits and wages.

Dear friends, please rest assured that our thoughts are with you during your protest, as we truly do hope that your just fight for decent working and living conditions, for the workers’ rights will be successful.

Your victory is our victory as well.

In Solidarity,

Piotr Duda
President

1. Being on the wrong side of the Poles is a really bad idea in Wisconsin
The names in the phone book make you think you are in Poland. BTW, Milwaukee has the grandest architecture downtown. Visit sometime

11. I love that museum on the water.
GF is from Mequon, and I visited Milwaukee for the first time, last Fall.

Living where I do, I fully expected the worst. Man, was I surprised. The restaurants and bars were great.

10. I'm very moved by this.
My morale is rising daily. I think it helps move things in the literal sense too in that the momentum is waxing.

17. K & R
The solidarity movement helped bring down the communism, and it can do the same with fascism.
