Source: BBC

The Egyptian military has reaffirmed the country's commitment to all its regional and international treaties.

The announcement, which was read by a spokesman on state TV, implicitly confirms that the country's peace treaty with Israel will remain intact.

The military also vowed to oversee a peaceful transition to civilian rule.

3. Good
I did not much worry about that, but it is good nevertheless to hear it spoken in clear, unambiguous terms.

4. I wouldn't have expected otherwise.
They need a stable situation to restore investment into the country particularly their tourist industry on which they are heavily reliant.

8. Updated: Egypt moves to reassure allies

(snip)
The BBC's Wyre Davis in Cairo says the statement should allay the concerns of the United States and Israel, where politicians are anxious that a change in leadership could jeopardise the 1979 Camp David accords.

Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz welcomed the news.

"This is a good announcement ... Peace is not only in the interest of Israel but also of Egypt. I am very happy with this announcement," he told Israeli TV.

The military also said it had asked the current government to stay on until a new one was formed, which would "pave the way for an elected civil authority to build a free democratic state".

Egypt will maintain its peace treaty with Israel, military says
In new statement, Egypt's army underlines country's commitment Egypt's int'l treaties in the wake of a revolution that resulted in the ouster of long-time President Hosni Mubarak.

The military statement, aired on state TV, was its first, cautious attempt to define the next steps after Mubarak handed over power to a council of his top generals and resigned on Friday in the face of an 18-day wave of popular protests.

The preserving of Mubarak's last government was likely to disappoint protesters, thousands of whom remain in their camp in Cairo's central Tahrir Square. Many of them have demanded more dramatic steps like the dissolving of parliament and the scrapping of the current government to form a broader-based transitional body to oversee reforms until elections can be held.

The military's statement did not rule out these steps might still be carried out.

13. Only as long as the military can guide Egypt along the path
to a stable, secular democracy.

If the Muslim Brotherhood takes over, and turns Egypt into a Sunni version of Iran, do we still pay them the money? Let's hope we never have to face that question.
