Report: Republicans Give Up On Redefining Rape
Source: TMP-Politico

Politico reports this morning that Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), the lead sponsor of the bill and chair of the House pro-life caucus, will remove the phrase "forcible rape" from the bill and replace it with the same wording used in the Hyde Amendment. That Amendment bans federal abortion coverage already, and proponents of the House law say their goal was to make Hyde -- which has to be renewed every year -- a permanent fixture of federal law.

1. I think the 2012 election mantra should be "R is for reverse"
The GOP hasn't done anything new since taking office - just revisiting the past. They've spent enough time trying to appease their base. Now what will they do?

2. They're going to have to redefine the term to include themselves in 2012.

4. Wow. LOVE your new mantra - such good images...
"Republicans are stuck in reverse."

"While President Obama and the Democrats continue to lift the car out of the ditch, Republicans keep spinning their wheels in reverse gear, driving us right back in the ditch each time."

"R only means one thing - Republican Reverse."

"In order to move things forward, you need to put the vehicle in drive. That's D. Only Democrats move things forward."

Thank YOU for some very positive and useful imagery.

10. You're welcome
but I think I may have heard someone say that before (maybe Pres. Obama), but if the Dems don't take advantage of that it will be a shame.

13. Republicans want to take their country back...
Democrats want to take it forward.

(I heard this somewhere too)

I like the R=reverse too.

3. Why not use the Whoopi Goldberg definition?
It's either rape, or it's rape-rape.

7. Read the last paragraph - this is being done to make an atrocious bill more acceptable

The altered bill language will be undoubtedly be seen by some as a victory for pro-choice activists. But the bill still contains numerous provisions that appear to dramatically expand federal limits on abortion funding. The new version of the bill apparently retains the clause that limits the incest exemption to girls under the age of 18 and language that makes it tougher for women to obtain abortion coverage through their private insurers.

He is not abandoning the bill - he is taking out a horrendous definition that would have lost him Republican support. It still is a very bad bill.

14. You're right - the bill will still nearly eliminate the right to choose an abortion!
It does it by expanding what is considered the (prohibited) use of federal funds for abortions. The premium for a health insurance policy that you purchase privately would no longer be a deductible medical expense on federal income taxes if the plan covers abortions. One's own Health Savings Account could no longer be used to pay for an abortion.

This bill is an abomination, with or without the outrageous redefinition of rape.

12. "Forcible Rape", say hello to "Ketchup is a Vegetable." Orwell-Speak raises its ugly head only to
get smacked down again. Trust but verify. Be vigilant!

15. makevit tougher for women to get abortion thru their private insurance-wth
I hope the pro-choice people unite and destroy this nasty anti-woman bill. the GOP is anti-child, too, because after their precious fetus is born they try to remove the right to be fed, the right to be sheltered, and the right to be loved.
