Liberal Group Ad Recalls When Obama Said Bush Tax Cuts Offended His Conscience
Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Even as it gets members of its party in line on the Hill, the Obama White House continues to take veritable punches from some of its most vocal critics over the tax cut deal it cut with Republicans.

On Thursday, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee -- perhaps the biggest irritant this administration has -- put out the second straight ad accusing the president of capitulating on tax cuts for the wealthy.

Like the last one, the spot uses Obama's own campaign rhetoric (lofty even by 2008 standards) against him, with footage of the then-candidate proclaiming that the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy -- as part of a larger economic philosophy -- "offend" his "conscience."

Curiously, PCCC is airing the ad in Indiana -- a setting that would, seemingly, have fewer receptive eyes than a more traditional Democratic state. But the strategic reasoning is simpler than reaching a like-minded audience. Indiana is the spot where Obama gave the campaign address that PCCC uses. It also houses a few Democratic House members whose votes the organization is targeting.

15. No....
he is busting his ass off so that the loser tax bracket does not jump from %10 to 15% (a 50% increase) and that millions of people get unemployment benefits. Unfortunately, the repubs fillubuster and the only way to get all of this is to give the repubs some red meat.

19. We really can't afford tax breaks for anyone,
Edited on Thu Dec-09-10 12:39 PM by Autumn
at this price. They will start screaming about the deficit before the ink is dry on their tax breaks legislation and those cuts will be on the ones who can least afford it. Unemployment? I'm going to say BS that the pukes would filibuster. They have unemployed constituents too.

16. He can fight for his integrity....
but people who have no job and no income don't give a shit about integrity right now and those whose taxes will go up from 10% to 10% if a deal is not struck don't give a shit about integrity right now....you ever hear of the fillubuster....because of that Obama is forced to do things he does not want to do and is now putting his ass on the line for the groups I mentioned above.

12. Sold indeed.
Forty acres and a mule from Rethugs, and about the same chance that they'll keep their word. I'm beginning to think he was just too inexperienced and when surrounded by the heavy hitters, caved completely.

20. Just sent a small contribution
Had sworn off anymore giving, but decided we need to start now on cleaning up our party. If all that money, volunteering, and support we gave to O in 07-08 can be duplicated now to get more progressives in the party, we will have a head start for the next election.

22. Let's see: Indiana voted R-for-President in 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96, 00, and 04
In 08, Indiana voted D-for-President

So now the PCCC is running ads in Indiana to attempt to discredit the D-President?

Sounds like an undercover wedge-driving operation to me

25. Explain to me how moving Indiana out of the Democratic column
and back into the Republican column would make your favored tax policy more likely

I mean, I agree with you about the tax policy, but I really just don't see how badmouthing Obama in Indiana does anything except strengthen the Republicans' hand -- and it's so blatantly obvious to me, that I can't see it as anything except an undercover Republican stunt

26. We cannot afford to be pragmatic.
That sounds counterintuitive, but it's true. We need to be willing to hold "our" Democrats hostage; that is, to threaten to politically destroy those who deviate from core progressive principles, and to actually follow through when necessary. If we have this as established practice, we'd have a disciplined party and not a creaking mess.
