Daylight Savings Time Means Smoke Detector Battery Time

(Ottumwa) -- Daylight Saving Time begins tonight, so don't forget to move your clock forward 1 hour before you go to sleep.

And it's also the time of year that the Ottumwa Fire Department reminds residents to install new batteries in your smoke detectors. It's estimated that 94% of homes in the United States have smoke detectors, but up to a third of them don't work. The Fire Department encourages people to check their smoke detector at least once a month, and the National Fire Protection Agency recommends replacing the smoke alarms in your home if they are more than 10 years old.

Master Firefighter, Kerry McDonald says, "We find a lot of homes that have working smoke alarms that just, they either take out the batteries for some reason or they let them go, and they're just no good when they don't keep the batteries up, and smoke detectors do save lives."

2. i know. 8^) i've been through two fires.
i wasn't home for one of them, but arrived just in time to see my flaming bed being tossed out of a window into the snow. electrical. the next one was just smoke damage... i lived on the top floor of an 8-plex and a first-floor unit was gutted. that time a hallway smoke alarm caused me to be the first one to call 911. saved the building.

4. 9-Volt Batteries at RS: Pay for Two, Get Four
According to the Radio Shack sale flyer that arrived last week, when you buy two nine-volt batteries of the sort that used to be called "transistor radio batteries", RS will toss in another two of the same type at no extra charge. These batteries are often used in smoke detectors, and there seems to be an effort (at least among sellers of batteries) that these be changed twice a year, at every time change.

Mighty timely (yuk, yuk) of RS to do that, as I had two such batteries give up the ghost a few days ago.

The sale should last through the month of April.

I do not work for Radio Shack.

6. I change mine when the detectors start chirping
Amazingly enough, they all start chirping AT THE SAME TIME.

I don't recommend this to anyone else, though. Listen to our Iowan friend and change them once a year.
