Reid plans showdown with GOP on funds for education, Medicaid
By Alexander Bolton - 07/29/10 07:04 PM ET

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will force Republicans to vote next week on a $26.1 billion package of education funding and Medicaid assistance to states.

It will be a tough vote for centrist Republicans because the provisions are popular with Democratic and Republican governors and would not add to the deficit.

The entire cost of the bill is covered by offsets, such as a provision to end tax credits on corporate foreign-earned income. Closing the foreign income tax credits will raise $9 billion in revenue.

Democrats will also make $8.4 billion in spending recissions. Another $6.7 billion will come from cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

2. It's good to see he is using them.
Let's hope he continues to use them so that they do not atrophy.

3. I wish Reid would not make this bold statements--how often have
the Republicans been able to make him cave or appear weak.

What was cut to pay for these????

Do not get me wrong--looking as if Reid is trying to pick
a fight with Republicans has not been a winner in the past.

Here is the basic truth--you cannot embarass Republicans
about Medicaid. They do not like it. Their rich consituents
could care less about the Republicans attacking Medicaid.

The poor are not a Republican consitiuency.

Yes, some lower income Americans vote for Republicans.
They vote on GOD, Guns, Gays and Abortion;, and sadly
many of them have been conned into believing their taxes
pay for people on Medicaid.

You cannot shame Republicans on these issues.

Otherwise known as the Food Stamp Program...Taking from the most needy is not what I would consider a Democratic goal..

7. So the White House got their way and funds will be removed from food stamps instead of Arnie's pet

project: "Race to the Top". This is exactly the lead balloon that the White House floated and somehow it's still floating.

(Funds for education that is)

Cutting funds for food stamps during an economic depression is EVIL.

11. Not sure I like the recission of the foreign income-tax credit.
If it's the one I'm thinking it is, it produced a noticeable increase in revenues when it was instituted as corporations with overseas income repatriated that income and just paid the difference between overseas and US taxes. It might well lead to a drop in income, whatever the CBO says (who knows what they were told they had to have as assumptions), as corporations leave retained earnings overseas.

I note that the Congress wasn't so pigheaded as to increase revenues by making the law that applies to actual people parallel.
