Italy seeks to end classroom crucifix ban
Source: bbc

The Italian government is appealing to the European court of human rights to overturn a ban on classroom crucifixes.

This case against crucifixes was brought by a woman who argued that her children had a right to a secular education under Italy's constitution.

Last year the court agreed with the mother, saying parents should be able to bring up children as they saw fit.
...
The Vatican has already said that the European court has no right intervening in such a profoundly Italian matter, says the BBC's Duncan Kennedy in Rome.

and what right has the vatican to intervene in yes, such such a profoundly Italian matter - it must be cleared by the vatican itself.

i agree on the ban, the classrooms of public schools today are mixed - there are kids from many religions, coming from north africa, east europe and china.

so really, the christian cross up there on the wall does no good.

another attempt of berlusconi's government to ride the catholic wave. it won't work, whatever it happens.

1. The crucifix on the wall does do good...
It will help to convert those heathen kids from many religions, coming from north Africa, east Europe and China.

Silly you. :P

3. well, seeing that Vatican city is its own state,
that would apply to the Catholic Church intervening in a profoundly Italian matter as well.

4. Sheer Madness (or Arrogance)
The Catholic Church is on its knees pleading for forgiveness of its abuse of children one moment, then asserting its patriarchy the next.

But it isn't really pleading for forgiveness, is it? It's demanding fealty and hereditary power.

What a bunch of addled old fools.

5.  Education Minister Mariastella Gelmini said the crucifix was a "symbol of our tradition"
Good lord! We were told it was a warning about what would happen to us if we kept misbehaving!

7. It's not nonsense
Religion must have a survival value, because it seems to proliferate and evolves naturally in most societies. Socities with religion built into the social structure seem to be stronger, probably because the religion unites individuals, and gives them the drive they need to go kill their neighbors to preserve societal homogeneity. It has also been very useful to confer legitimacy on unelected leaders ("God put the king in charge"). Many of us see so much injustice in this world, we need to cling to the belief that justice prevails somehow, so we believe in heaven and hell, and are comforted by the thought that George Bush and Dick Cheney will be taken to hell, where the devil will tie them to a chair, and torture them. Forever. Doesn't that make you feel good?
