Flash flooding strikes Oklahoma City
Source: UPI

OKLAHOMA CITY, June 14 (UPI) -- Oklahoma City officials warned motorists to stay home Monday and not underestimate the danger of driving on flooded streets.

Oklahoma City was slammed by persistent heavy rain and flash flooding, affecting Monday's morning travel, AccuWeather.com reported. Other cities such as Tulsa, Okla., St. Louis, Indianapolis and Cincinnati could see similar heavy storms as the system pushes east.

(snip)

People already on roadways or thinking about traveling "need to find a parking area on high ground and just wait for this to pass," Yager said. "This is treacherous. They can be late to work. Their life depends on it."

Yager said the city's storm-water drainage system couldn't keep up with the rain.

3. A major problem is that the "storm-water drainage system" is utterly pathetic - storm drains are
virtually non-existent on most streets, so even during fairly typical storms (granted, this one today was NOT typical), streets and intersections flood. Infrastructure in general is PITIFUL here. Your tax dollars NOT at work. I've lived in multiple cities, and never have I seen storm drains placed so far apart, if they exist at all. Pathetic.

And don't even get me started on how even in heavily populated areas in OKC/Norman/Edmond there are VERY few underpasses below train tracks (or overpasses above them) -- so every time a train goes through, traffic comes to a screeching halt. During rush hour it's a freakin' nightmare. And if there are back-to-back trains going different directions, you can be stuck for 15 minutes or so. OY.

6. same here in DFW area...
it boggled my mind when I first moved down here that most streets do not have any drainage at all. Of course, state can't afford them as the ideas of having state income tax and taxing corporations would go over like a fart in church.
