Turtle deaths running high since oil spill

Tuesday, 18 May, 201

NEW ORLEANS: At least 150 sea turtles have washed up dead or dying along the U.S. Gulf Coast since the giant oil spill off Louisiana, a higher number than normal for this time of year, a leading wildlife expert said on Monday.

The toll among sea turtles has been steadily rising since the deep-sea well ruptured last month, and the stranding count began to reach an unusually high level in the past week, said Dr. Michael Ziccardi, a veterinarian overseeing some of the area's wildlife rescue teams.

Several days ago, when the number of dead turtles stood at just over 100, federal wildlife officials said that was still considered typical for the season.

Wildlife officials are especially concerned for the well-being of sea turtles in the Gulf following the spill because all five species native to the region are endangered, and they are just heading into their spring nesting season.

This is a time of year when dead or debilitated turtles would normally begin to show up with greater frequency, but the 156 found since April 30 along the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida “are in higher numbers than you would expect,” Ziccardi said.

3. That's the truly awful part of all of this.
We deserve to kill ourselves with all the damage we have done. But all of those creatures that live in the oceans are the ones who will pay and pay and pay. And they have never done anything to anyone.

How do you ever put a pricetag on those lives lost for no good, goddamn reason except greed and more greed.

5. A few years ago for Mother's Day, Marta adopted a clutch of endangered sea turtles in Texas

I hope all those turtles can survive this. K&R!

6. I witnessed a turtle nest "hatching" for the first time last August.
Loggerheads. It was amazing. These babies go out to face incredible odds to survive - 1 in 1000 are believed to survive under normal circumstances. Now...

7. Marta was so upset by the title that she wouldn't read the story

At one time when our kids were young, we had a huge tank with over 20 turtles. That was about 1984-87.

8. Omaha Steve
I love these beautiful animals also. I am so sorry to feel the need to post sad information like this. It has not been determined yet the cause of the deaths, but
I feel everyone needs to be so outraged that we make sure these people are held accountable and that this NEVER happens again! If we don't use this tragedy to change the paradigm, then we have really lost.

blessings, G_j

10. I agree this needs to be posted

I just wish this post was getting more attention. I didn't tell her about the story last week where an endangered turtle was tortured and then killed. I read in on the DU or I wouldn't have known about it.

9. Yes, it is undetermined if their deaths have anything to do with the oil spill.
much the same way that it is un-determined if a man who was shot in the chest died from a heart attack, old age, or maby just maby the bullit.
