Poll: 50 percent say they'd support openly gay U.S. president
By Michael O'Brien - 03/29/10 11:09 AM ET

Half of the country said they could support an openly gay president of the United States, a new poll found Monday.

Fifty percent of respondents to the latest "60 Minutes"/Vanity Fair poll said they would support an openly gay person to serve as president. Forty-four percent said they were opposed.

The question was posed in connection to the military's plans to do away with the "Don't ask, don't tell policy," which currently prohibits gay and lesbian members from serving openly in the military.

The poll tested people's comfort with an openly gay president against two other political positions: Supreme Court justice and secretary of State.

29. Poll results on this are very sensitive to exact wording, and the wingnuts
have encouraged some significant confusion

It's clear by now most people would support civil unions

Why not "gay marriage"? .... because a fair number of uninformed people have been convinced that "allowing gay marriage" means "the government will force your church to marry gays."

4. But what about "USA Unit cohesion?"
If a gay were elected president the country might experience the rise of militia groups, inner-city murders, drug violence, and extreme poverty. TV might turn to such nelly programs as ballroom dancing and cooking shows.
Oh, wait.

Yikes!

This is STOOOOPID. They'd also support a gay quarterback! :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: But not gay Sec of State.

And now....what if the Prez was....(cue YouTube of that "danger prairie dog") ATHEIST!!!!!

Of course statistically, we've already HAD a gay president. Probably an atheist too. Though neither admitted it.

This is dumb.

A gay president, hugging his/her partner after being sworn in. That would just end them.

20. Wow
I would love to see the age break down.
People in my age group (18-24) are a lot more accepting of gay people.

As a lesbian, this is a surprising poll.

hand, would get very different results in this poll.

... but if he/she has the guts, brains and charisma to be president, I'd vote for them.

30. If only this 50% would show up at the voting booth when the issue is on the ballot!
I'm inclined to agree with the poster upthread who said the respondents were lying.

According to polls, almost no one would vote against a minority simply bc off minority status, either. Ditto, a woman. Yet, we know neither of those things are true. So, what people say to pollsters and what they do in the voting booth (if they vote at all) is not necessarily the same thing.
