Source: LA Times

Actor Peter Graves was found dead Sunday at his home in Pacific Palisades, according to law enforcement sources. Graves, who stared in "Mission: Impossible," "Airplane!" and Billy Wilder's "Stalag 17"--apparently died of natural causes, the sources said.

Graves was 83, according to a biography on the website IMDB.com.

....wasn't it was back in the 50s during the low-budget sci-fi heyday that Peter Graves starred in move called 'Them' about atomically mutated giant ants? For it's day, it was a pretty damn good movie with good special effects and plot....

....much better than the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes....

the greatest movie ever made, "The Beginning of the End". It was the absolute best movie about giant, mutated grasshoppers ever made. And it was supposed to take place in central Illinois, where I have always lived. However, unlike the movie, we don't have mountains.B-)

50. If he was found dead
it usually means that he was alone when he died. If he has been under a doctor's regular care, he most likely will not have an autopsy, while an autopsy takes place if he hasn't been seen by a doctor recently. In a specific case where there are family members around, it usually means that some care to the welfare of a patient is given.

Being "found dead" also poses the possibility that he could have been helped if someone were present to provide some life-saving measure, like CPR or mouth-to-mouth resucitation, or at least call for help.

53. I read several of the stories and it looks
like his family had gone into the house after they had all gone to brunch, but he didn't come in, and his daughter got to worrying, so she found him outside, having collapsed. She applied CPR, but it failed to be of help. So the story is misleading.

65. Agreed
What I remember about Mr Graves comes from his own "Biography" episode, when he was asked about his roles in the B and below grade movies. He said he of course knew about the quality of the films but thought he could always learn something about acting from each role he played. Not too shabby an outlook.

51. E! Link: Peter Graves, Star of Mission: Impossible, Airplane!, Dies

Peter Graves' career was more like three careers. At least. He was Mission: Impossible's pre-Tom Cruise leading agent, Jim Phelps. He was Airplane's Turkish prison-curious pilot, Capt. Oveur. He was the Emmy-winning host of Biography.

The silver-haired star who lent a steadiness and voice of authority to 60 years' worth of TV and film was found dead today of apparently natural causes in his Los Angeles-area home. He was 83.

For all his work—Graves' credits include the Billy Wilder WWII classic, Stalag 17, to bits on House and American Dad—the actor may be best remembered for listening very carefully to the following taped greeting: "Good morning, Mr. Phelps…"

Or, then again, maybe he's best remembered for interrogating young Joey (Rossie Harris) from the cockpit: "Have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"

54. His reversed mortgage ads broke my heart, though
I loved the guy, reminisce the airplane schtick from time to time, and loved him in Mission Impossible.

But this ad was a bad deal, because it encourages a bad practice (unless you have no kids or they don't care about you anymore and wait for you to die, never sign a reversed mortgage).

68. Reverse mortgages can be wonderful for seniors. One allowed
my parents to stay in their home far longer. It was easily paid off when they sold and moved to a seniors apartment but the income really helped them enjoy some travel and make improvements on their home.

I don't get the "no kids" comment. My parents had three children between them but none of us were looking for an inheritance. We were all just glad our folks didn't have any financial worries and enjoyed independent living as long as they did.

58. The Secretary will now disavow any knowledge of your actions.
I have to try this for the Impossible Mission Force, the IMF:

(Sometimes in a phone booth, accompanied by a plain brown envelope containing pictures, an unusually small reel-to-reel tape machine is started.)

Good Morning Mr. Phelps, ...
Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to ...
...
Of course, should any of your IMF force be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.

This tape will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck Jim! Pfffft (tape smokes)(Que music)

In that Arlo Guthrie existential kind of way, it sure was great having you around Mr. Graves. R.I.P.
