Poll Finds PBS Most Trusted Name in News
Source: Marisa Guthrie, Broadcasting & Cable

A new poll finds PBS among the most trusted institutions in America and the most trusted name in news. According to an annual poll conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media, 40% of Americans trust PBS' news and public affairs programs a "great deal." Fox News was second at 29% and CNN was third at 27%.

Additionally, when asked to chose whether news coverage, investigations and discussions of major issues on PBS programs was "liberal," "mostly fair" or "conservative," 40% chose "mostly fair." NBC and ABC were second with 33% each followed by CNN (31%), NPR (29%), Fox News (25%) and MSNBC (24%).

PBS Kids also earned high marks from the public with 67% of respondents rating children's programming "very important" compared to 49% for children's programming on cable and 44% on broadcast television.

3. The best the US can do is 40% trust, and that isn't even full trust.
40% of Americans trust PBS' news and public affairs programs a "great deal."

And that was the highest.

That's just sad.

7. That may be because some people will only trust a source that agrees with their own outlook.
They only want to hear their own opinions broadcast back at them in order to validate them. You only have to look at the people who trust Fox News to see that going on.

I love too how Fox is next....but at 10% less! 29%! So much for their "majority" fantasy!

14. Just a shame
that what you get on BBC is sanitised and you cannot access our proper home site here in the UK. I realised that when I was in OH last November.

9. IMO, the best thing about PBS is that they present both sides of an issue
and allow you to form your own opinion without a lot of sensationalism. They deal with facts and don't try to play on your emotions.

manner once said on C-Span. "It takes hard work to be boring
for an hour."

Congratulations, PBS.

18. Many don't watch MSNBC because it doesn't come in to as many homes
across the country as Fox and CNN do. Of course, that kind of information is not provided
to offer perspective. Of course, I would still give MSNBC low marks (just not as low as the rest of the cable and network folks) because 1/2 of the day is taken up with folks who I equate to garbage....and I only find two to three hours of a day's viewing "trustworthy" max.

15. PBS is more civil & listens to both sides of an issue
while the other stations (especially FOX)tend to be into who can get the best zinger in...a wrestling match but with that said I still like to watch MSNBC: Keith, Rachel, etc.

16. Too bad many americans don't watch it.
The main reason why most American's don't watch pbs because it does not have primetime entertainment. If PBS made a real drama (not the various British mysteries or stale britcom imports), they will get a lot of viewers.

Oh wait, the commercial networks are opposed to it because it will bring REAL COMPETITION.

26. PBS used to be impeccable. It's another thing DeLay's Congress and Bush ruined.
PBS did a sneakily nasty documentary on the Kennedy family that's been airing over and over in Massachusetts for a very long time.

With NOW and Bill Moyer's Journal departing, PBS will be mostly good for things like Sesame Street, IMO.

No donations from me.
