Stimulus created 600,000 jobs at the end of 2009, White House says
Source: Washington Post

The Obama administration's economic stimulus program created nearly 600,000 jobs in the final three months of 2009, a figure in line with the administration's goals for job creation through the end of 2010, the White House reported Saturday night.

The new total was down from the totals reported for the previous quarter, partly because the administration decided in December to count only the jobs paid for with stimulus funding instead of estimating the number of jobs "created or saved" with the money.

Critics had panned the "created or saved" measurement as a subjective and confusing way of determining the program's success.

The federal government on Saturday released about 160,000 quarterly spending reports from stimulus recipients representing about one-fifth of the program's spending. Federal law requires the release of reports covering infrastructure and education spending. Officials said new safeguards should help avoid the mistakes discovered in last fall's first batch of information.

I wonder whether this figure includes the jobs saved in connection with car company bailouts of Chrystler and GM.

right on the money, too.

Assuming the 600,000 is accurate, How many dollars per "creation" does that work out to? And how long do we expect those jobs to last?

13. I checked my zip code
I know the people at each of the agencies listed, small town, and the school district. Every agency got the money reported. Do you think nobody will notice if money is listed that didn't go to one of these agencies or contractors?

16. That's pretty depressing.
26 million dollars for 6 saved jobs in one county.

12. Taking the 'official' figures for new unemployment claims...
lost jobs...for '09, we actually lost 6 million jobs in that year. Using the figures for the past 2-3 years, we have probably lost 16 million jobs at a minimum job loss guess.

Crowing over a lousy 600,000 jobs created(?)is nothing but political boondoggling. My guess is that the job situation is worse than we know. For those of us who have been downsized, offshored, or plain thrown away jobwise, the new claims stack right up there with Mother Goose--the fable of your choice.

The number of new jobless claims continue to, if not rise, stay about the same month after month. Senate has not attempted to increase funding for those benefits that are running out for many people.

This is at a time when the taxpayer bailout of the big investment banks and the other thieves are throwing money in multiple millions at their biggest execs--read crooks--and daring us to do anything about it.

Bad times here in Black Rock.

17. It's had little to no effect
For any industry, including construction.

For example, I drove 300 miles from one part of my state to another this weekend. On the way, I passed numerous road construction projects with those big ARRA signs. Good news, right? Well, not really. Every single one of those projects had been initiated prior to the stimulus bill and were fully funded by the state. They've been ongoing for years. My state allocated stimulus funds to already funded projects and then dumped the original allocated funds into whatever black hole funds in this state get sucked into when no one is paying attention.

15. I love the arguments that the admin *planned* for this level of unemployment all along
It's why, after distributing trillions to AIG, Citi, et al. with such stunning alacrity, they've distributed only a small portion of the stimulus monies designed to help regular people--"all according to plan!" they will assure you. :eyes:
