Lawyer says Army, Yee might settle
Military officials are weighing a possible settlement that would dismiss the most serious charges against a Muslim Army chaplain accused of mishandling classified information.
Lawyers for Capt. James Yee proposed the settlement to military prosecutors, the terms of which were "inadvertently" e-mailed to numerous media outlets on Thursday.
Prior to his arrest, Yee was counseling al-Qaida and Taliban suspects detained at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba. Yee, who previously served at Fort Lewis, was arrested Sept. 10 while flying home to visit his wife and young daughter in Olympia.
Military officials initially linked Yee to a possible espionage ring at Guantanamo, but none of the six charges he now faces relate to spying.
