Lawyer worked with George W. Bush on Alabama campaign

JIM MORRILL

Staff Writer

A long-forgotten political campaign has suddenly landed Charlotte lawyer Murph Archibald in the spotlight.

Back in fall 1972, Archibald worked on the campaign of his uncle, Winton "Red" Blount, a former postmaster general running for the U.S. Senate in Alabama. One of Archibald's fellow staffers: 26-year-old Texan George W. Bush.

At the request of his father, Bush had gone to help Blount's campaign. The younger Bush was an officer in the Texas National Guard and requested a transfer to an Alabama unit so he could work with Blount.

Now that Bush is commander-in-chief and seeking re-election against a Vietnam veteran in Democrat John Kerry, critics have renewed questions about how he spent his time in Alabama. Last month, the president released boxes of military records.

4. OMG... He was even aWol from working the campaign!!!
Edited on Fri Mar-12-04 09:58 AM by leftchick
I had to register for the article but this little gem made it worth it! Look at what a fuck-off he is...

<snip>"The one time I tried to engage him about (it) ... he wouldn't talk about it. He just changed the subject," says Archibald, 59. "I guess he's the only guy I ever talked to in those years who wouldn't talk about his time in the military."

Archibald says Bush typically came to work around noon, hours later than other campaign workers. He says Bush often joked about drinking the night before and about getting out of legal scrapes while a student at Yale.

Bush's job on the campaign was state organizational director. His duties included getting signs, buttons and other material to campaign volunteers around the state. According to Archibald, a senior campaign official came to him one day and said the job wasn't being done and asked him to do it. He took over.
