1. It's too bad...

It could be worse. But it's too bad that in this case, the Democratic Party lawmakers are in the leadership of the fight to curtail civil rights for lesbian and gay people. At the very least, there must be no legal distinction between "civil unions" and "marriage."

2. Can someone explain this to me?

There are churches, even Christian churches, who perform weddings for same sex couples. Will a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage make it illegal for churches to do this? And do we really want to go there?

And why does gay marriage scare people? Civil unions are OK but marriage is not? I'm clueless.
