PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A suspected suicide car bomb ripped through a police building in an army garrison of Pakistan's northwest city of Peshawar on Friday, killing up to 11 people, police said.

It was the second bomb attack in Peshawar in 24 hours, striking a day after 40 people died in a wave of militant attacks against security targets in Pakistan's eastern city Lahore and the country's volatile northwest.

"I have counted 11 dead bodies and 13 wounded in the emergency unit of the hospital," police official Mohammad Gul told AFP by telephone from the main government-run hospital in Peshawar.

Three militants - including a rare woman suicide bomber - struck a police building in the north-western city of Peshawar this morning, killing 11 people, as the Pakistani Taleban continued a two-week wave of violence focused on security forces.

The attackers targeted the heavily fortified Central Investigation Agency building, which is next to a mosque, a day after militants struck three police buildings in the eastern city of Lahore and a fourth police station in Peshawar.

A car filled with explosives drove to the main gate of the CIA building as a motorcycle carrying a man and a woman pulled up behind it, Liaquat Ali Khan, the Peshawar police chief, told reporters.

The woman jumped off and ran towards a nearby housing complex where army officers live, while the man smashed the motorcycle into the car, which exploded into a huge fireball, he said.
