Judge denies group's bid to block flu vaccine
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON — A judge on Wednesday denied an advocacy group's bid to prevent the government from giving pregnant women flu vaccines with a preservative that contains mercury.

Leaders of the Coalition for Mercury-Free Drugs say their effort took on a new urgency when a government advisory committee recently recommended that pregnant women be among the first people to get swine flu vaccinations when the vaccine becomes available this fall.

A small amount of the mercury-containing preservative thimerosal is in most influenza shots, including swine flu vaccines, but some are produced thimerosal-free. The coalition argued that pregnant women should only get the thimerosal-free version because of a risk that the mercury in the shot could poison a fetus and cause medical problems, including autism.

But U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton ruled against the group's request for a preliminary injunction because he said the group couldn't prove that pregnant women they represent would get vaccines containing thimerosal.

1. That is one crazy advisory committee. Advising that pregnant
women should be vaccinated with a vaccine that is linked with death and paralysis. Say no to H1N1.

The Daily Telegraph reports that specialist doctors are urged to “report every case of Guillain-Barre syndrome to the Health Protection Agency so the circumstances of each patient can be investigated,” indicating research, despite advising that “experts are not expecting to spot any cases linked to the vaccinations.” (Rebecca Smith, Medical Editor, Doctors told to watch for Guillain-Barre syndrome during Swine flu vaccination programme, Daily Telegraph, August 16 2009)

Let us decide based on transparent information.

2. You are almost as likely to get GBS from the flu as from the vaccine
Gullain-Barre Syndrome turns up in a small percentage of the population following any illness with flu-like symptoms.

It turns up in a slightly larger percentage of the population following *any* flu vaccine, not just H1N1.

It turns up in the highest percentage of the population if they get a flu vaccine within a few weeks of having any illness with flu-like symptoms.

And GBS has nothing to do with thimerosol.

3. This is why he denied it?
"because he said the group couldn't prove that pregnant women they represent would get vaccines containing thimerosal."

Well maybe that is within the letter of the law - who knows? But it seems pretty weak.

Why on earth do they insist on using a mercury compound on vaccines that little children and pregnant women will receive? Are there really no safe alternatives?

4. Also in the article.
Thimerosal used to be used in a number of vaccines, but manufacturers began removing the preservative from all routine child vaccines in 2001 as a precaution. But numerous large studies have shown no link between thimerosal and autism, or other health problems.

6. Wow - somebody really flipped out for no reason whatsoever!
I don't think anybody was anti-vaccine, just talking about what additives might be dangerous for vulnerable populations.

7. They tried to block vaccines- ergo, they're anti-vacine.
"I don't think anybody was anti-vaccine, just talking about what additives might be dangerous for vulnerable populations."

These people don't care about risks to vulnerable populations. If they did, they wouldn't be anti-vaccine.

8. It looks like they want to have vaccines for pregnant women
But ones without the mercury compound in them:

"The coalition argued that pregnant women should only get the thimerosal-free version because of a risk that the mercury in the shot could poison a fetus and cause medical problems"

So it sounds like that group is pro-vaccine but anti-thimerosal.

9. No, they want pregnant women to die from the flu.
There's nothing pro-vaccine about these pieces of shit.
