Muslim model to be flogged in Malaysia for drinking beer
Source: Press Trust of India

Kuala Lumpur, Jul 21 (PTI) A Muslim model from Singapore has been sentenced to flogging by a Malaysian Islamic court after she confessed to drinking beer at a nightclub here.

Kartika Sari Sewi Shu-karno, 32, a part-time model pleaded guilty of having a beer in a nightclub last year, was ordered by the Shariah High Court yesterday to receive six strokes of the cane and pay USD 1,400 as fine, according to New Straits Times.

"The court reached the judgment after the accused pleaded guilty. We feel the sentence is fair after going through the prosecution's argument and since the cane is provided for in the law", said Judge Datuk Abdul Rahman Yunus.

He added the accused could face a three-year jail term if she failed to pay the fine while the canning would be carried out by federal prison authorities.

6. It is a cultural choice here.

If you follow it, fine. If you don't, THERE'S NO ONE HERE TO FLOG YOU!!!

Unlike Malaysia, religious courts do not overrule federal/secular courts in the US. I lived in Malaysia for 2 yrs...thankfully as a Christian, by where I was allowed to drink constantly.

:woohoo:

26. Uh, newsflash, in the western Muslim enclaves that embrace Sharia
you will get flogged.

Just as women will be forced to wear the shrouds by their husbands, and girls will be forced into marriage as young teens, and every other hideous thing associated with this religion will continue to go on and on regardless of location.

Because it IS their culture. And they want to bring it to the west and "make" us "respect" it, and "permit" it.

The culture excuse is simply a way to look away without examing the hard truth about the situation and the people caught in the trap. The only way to help them get out of that trap is to keep pointing out the misogyny, the ugliness, the wrongness of it. Imho, never "excuse" hideous shit as "their culture" when it's so blatently, despicably wrong.

34. When I lived in Iran, all my neighbors enjoyed the ab-e-jo (beer--a Persian invention, you know) and
a few of them were hard core for the Johnny Walker, too.

It wasn't just the "furriners" or the "half breeds" sidling into the Armenian booze shop. And those Armenians were clever, they also sold cases of bottles of soda, so the "good Muslims" could make the pretext that they were buying coca-cola for the kiddies. And of course, everything was discreetly delivered to your car trunk, wrapped in paper or hidden in a box.

40. It's a mixed country
Muslim 60.4%, Buddhist 19.2%, Christian 9.1%, Hindu 6.3%, Confucianism, Taoism, other traditional Chinese religions 2.6%, other or unknown 1.5%, none 0.8% (2000 census)

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/MY.html

The non-drinking laws don't apply to non-Muslims (I know their ID cards give a religion, and they refuse to let people change their official religion. But I didn't know there were criminal penalties for Muslims drinking there, especially as harsh as this.

Seems Malaysia uses it for illegal immigrants too:

Rights watchdog Amnesty has urged Malaysia to abolish caning, saying that tens of thousands of migrants had received the "inhuman and degrading" punishment in recent years.

Amnesty cited a statement in Malaysian parliament last week that said local authorities had caned at least 34,923 migrants between 2002 and 2008, 60 percent of them from neighbouring Indonesia.
...
The caning sentence was added to Malaysian immigration laws since 2002, amid concern over the ramifications of having a large migrant workforce.

Under the laws, those staying in Malaysia illegally are subject to a mandatory whipping of up to six strokes of the cane, fines and up to five years in jail.

Have a few of those hypocrites lying dead in the alley, with whip marks on their backs and a burkah stuffed over their heads, and they may get the message.

I wonder how much abuse of women it will take for that to happen.

the corruption and double-standards among many in the Malay Muslim ruling class is nauseating. Behind closed doors, you better believe they have well-stocked liquor cabinets yet they allow these fanatics to carry out inhumane punishments. Most Malaysians i know are reasonable people, i hope this is a wake-up call to kick these fools out of power before Malaysia sinks into the Dark Ages.

36. This is both disgusting and ridiculous..
But our own culture is hardly better when examined dispassionately and objectively, we steal decades of people's lives from them for possessing recreational drugs of which our society does not approve, some of which are objectively considerably less harmful than ethyl alcohol.

It is so difficult to get beyond our social conditioning to see things in a truly objective light, which would you rather suffer, six years hard time in the pen or six strokes with a cane?

And let's face it, most of our disapproval of certain recreational substances flows from the essentially Christian nature of our society.

I fully expect to get flamed for this post and I frankly don't give a damn.

That said, Malaysia is very harsh on substances. They are one of a handful of countries that execute people for some drug offenses.

It's true, we're too enlightened for floggings. So we send our undesirables to prison instead, where they can get raped, beaten and otherwise rehabilitated.
