War crimes trial sought for Blair, three others over Iraq

LONDON (AFP) - A British group that opposed the Iraq (news - web sites) war said it wants the International Criminal Court in The Hague (news - web sites) to consider whether Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) should be tried for war crimes.

Legal Action Against War said it was also asking the court to look into similar alleged offences by Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon and Attorney General Lord Goldsmith.

It said "a principal charge" against the four men was "intentionally launching an attack knowing that it will cause incidental loss of life or injury to civilians".

Details of its case were to be set out Tuesday at a press conference in London.

Blair was US President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s staunchest ally in the run-up to war against Iraq, citing Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s feared weapons of mass destruction as the prime reason for Britain joining the March 20 invasion.
