Old lotto ticket nets struggling student $13m
Source: ABC

A Perth university student struggling to scrape together some cash has discovered she is $13 million richer after checking a ten-month-old Oz lotto ticket.

At first glance the woman thought she had won $13,000.
----------

The 30-year-old woman has told officials her father gave her the ticket as a gift in July last year. For the past 10 months the outstanding ticket has made headlines as Western Australia's largest unsolved lottery mystery.

The woman says she put the ticket in a drawer and completely forgot about it until she began worrying about money. "I woke up this morning worried about our finances," she said.

"something made me think to check the tickets and I thought that if I win something, then I could help Mum and Dad out."

1. Lucky twice!
Once for winning, twice for remembering.

4. We're gonna win that puppy someday...........
We never buy a ticket but this story illustrates one of my basic beliefs about the Lotto (which I like to refer to as a stupidity tax). Your odds of winning are so bad, that actually buying a ticket doesn't really improve them that much. You are just as likely to find a winning ticket on the street (or in your underwear drawer) as you are to purchase a winning ticket. I don't like the fact that our state budget now relies on the unrealistic hopes of sometimes desperate people. I don't think funding a properly function government should be the result of losing a bet.

6. aside from using your last dollar to play the slots or the lottery,
I feel that, yes, the chances of winning are astronomical, but why not try ... your odds of winning are better if you purchase a ticket than if you never purchase a ticket ever ...

8. Australian belatedly wins $10 million lottery
Source: Yahoo News

PERTH, Australia – An Australian student worried about her parents' money problems rifled through a pile of her lottery tickets Thursday and discovered that she had won 13 million Australian dollars ($10 million) 10 months ago, a state lottery agency said.

The student, living in the west coast city of Perth, received the winning ticket for a draw on July 22 last year as a gift from her father, Western Australia state agency Lotterywest said.

She had been unaware that it would have expired after 12 months, it said in a statement.

"I woke up this morning worried about our finances. Something made me think to check the tickets and I thought that if I win something, then I could help mom and dad out," Lotterywest quoted her as saying. She declined to be identified by name.
