Obama to tea-baggers: I've already cut taxes
Source: Marketwatch

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Obliquely answering the hundreds of "tea bag" protests around the country on tax day, President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he's already delivered the most progressive tax cut in history, with 95% of families getting a tax break in every paycheck.

Americans need a "government that is working to create jobs and opportunity for them, rather than simply giving more and more to those at the very top in the false hope that wealth will trickle down," Obama said.

In his remarks, Obama decried the use of taxes as a political wedge issue "to scare people into supporting policies that increased the burden on working people instead of helping them live their dreams."

"We start from the simple premise that we should reduce the tax burden on working people, while helping Americans go to college, own a home, raise a family, start a business and save for retirement," Obama said.

82. ru-roh, somebody hit a sore spot
He wasn't referring to you....ummm...eerrrr..... he was referring to all of the "other" people living in trailers. Yeah, that's the ticket! The "OTHER" people, so don't get your panties in a bunch. I can send you a whole other list of synonyms for "trailer living brother". For now, I will define it for ya:

Trailer trash, trailer living brother or trailer park trash is a derogatory North American English term for white people of low socio-economic standing. The term originates from the belief that those of low standing within society often reside in travel trailers or mobile homes, especially in trailer parks. Because trailers often provide housing at a lower cost than conventional foundation-built houses, and some trailers have few amenities, there is a popular cultural conception that those who live in trailer parks are usually only those who are too poverty to afford anything else. Although trailer parks have a high density compared to other rural or suburban housing, they are usually created on large tracts of undeveloped land in rural or suburban areas. There is a related stereotype of trailer trash being killed by tornados, often cited humorously

99. we live in a double wide . . .
AKA, "manufactured home" and it does have a foundation. But it's paper thin walls and cheap construction reminds me daily that it is a trailer no matter how much fixing up we try to do. For us it was a matter of necessity, our land lord was selling the rental we were in and my my grandmother had just died and left us some land. We needed reasonably priced housing quickly so the double wide seemed the best solution. The upside is that it insures as a house since it is on a foundation but it is taxed as a trailer since it has a VIN number just like a car.

103. That does sound pretty cool.
I love the fact that your trailer has a VIN. I am not sure why, but I think it is funny. Truth is, I don't own a home either, I just rent a house. I never really saw the need to buy a house. As long as you have a place to live that you like, that is the important thing. It sounds like your double wide offered you a decent solution for a difficult situation.

129. You never know
I work in the financial industry. Years ago I worked in a large firm. It was February and when I came in to the division office there the name was on top of the board. Already made forty grand and it ain't even Valentines Day. "How does he do it", I asked a friend. "Didn't you know, it is that same old woman."

This guy went on appointment. He was passing huge homes and getting all pumped up. Then the road got bad, before long he arrived in front of a rundown single wide. His high hopes suddenly evaporated. Inside is an older woman. He gains her trust and she walks into the backroom and comes out with a cardboard box. It is filled with bonds, old bonds--yellow with age. Twenty one million dollars in all.

Yeah the pigs are sure squealing loudly today, as 95% of America got a tax cut, but you wouldn't believe it if you listened to Fox, Right Wing hate radio and their blogs. One of them posted my cartoon as a complaint about what we liberals are saying about the tea party scam. The replies were strange and in the end I think it backfired because these people are so uninformed and when confronted with facts they backed off.

26. Actually, that is exactly the kind of tax break
that will stimulate an economy. It seems counter intuitive but it works because it gets spent almost immediately, at the grocery store, drug store, etc. Larger sums tend to get socked away in savings or investments. The best return on Stimulus dollars are actually food stamps. It helps get things moving and then starts to get jobs back. Extended unemployment benefits and fed money to state governments also stimulate the economy and create jobs. It's less about individual relief and more about reviving the economy.

I understand your sentiments especially toward Wall street/banks. There is no excuse for the billions dumped into Banks. I haven't been able to look at my 401K. I just can't bring myself to open the envelopes when they arrive. It's a disaster.

i just saw the price of a medium bottle yesterday..over $9. bucks a bottle..so that $13. bucks a week isn't going far..but i can assure you..my former neighbor who had a 350,000 dollar pool isn't too upset you are thrilled over your pitance..while his ass was bailed out as a top exec at UBS..no sirree..he is now the proud owner of over a $4 million dollar home on a river..and his new pool is even more expensive..he is damn thrilled your tax bucks paid off his failures!!!!!!!!!

And don't bother looking at your 401K..your little tax thrill won't come close to paying off what you have lost..

Oh and when my former neighbor is sitting in his multi million $$$ beach house ( his second house) and sitting dockside on his Yacht..he won't be thinking about your tax thrill..he is laughing all the way to the bank ..on your money!
Oh and your kids money and your grand kids money ..even those unborn yet!!

And PS ..don't wait for the invitation to a weekend barby at his mansion..the invitiation is not in the mail!!

but many in this country are getting other things in the mail..like pink slips and forclosures..

U.S. FORECLOSURE INDEX: Foreclosures Soar in March, Up 44 Percent Over February’s High
Source: Business Wire

Lenders End Moratoria, Opening Flood of Foreclosures; Re-Defaults and Job Losses Also Take Their Toll

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Completed foreclosures hit another monthly record in March as 175,199 homes were lost to foreclosure, up 44 percent from February’s record high, according to the latest U.S. Foreclosure Index released today by ForeclosureS.com, a leading real estate information provider.

The number of foreclosed properties was up dramatically from 121,756 in February. Nearly 370,000 properties have been repossessed by lenders so far this year – 18.3 of every 1,000 households – up more than 38 percent from 266,986 in the fourth quarter of 2008, the U.S. Foreclosure Index shows, and up 76 percent from 210,280 in the first quarter of 2008.

The first-quarter 2009 total is the highest quarterly total of completed foreclosures since the foreclosure crisis began. Pre-foreclosure filings – filings that could lead up to a completed foreclosure – also reached their highest quarterly level, topping 600,000 for the first time since the foreclosure crisis began.

While February and March headlines boasted of government efforts to stop foreclosures, in fact March was the first month when major government-backed lenders – including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – lifted moratoria on many properties in the first week of March. Only properties eligible for modification under the Obama administration’s plan were covered by continuing foreclosure moratoria, according to statements by the two agencies.

pss..do spend that $13-17 bucks a week wisely...but I assure you it will not do a fucking thing to help the people losing their homes and jobs nationwide..and it won't do a fucking thing to open all the stores and businesses closing daily in my neck of the woods..when i see those closures..i cry for all the people who used to work there..and now won't get that fucking $13 bucks a week!

Oh and about that 2 million people Obama said his tax cuts will help..well since January over 2 million lost their jobs..so it won't help them a fucking bit!

Two different things. The unemployed will be helped by the jobs created by the stimulus, the employed will be helped by the payroll tax cut. It's irrational to expect that every part of his plan will help every person. You have to look at the whole picture.

Why should it matter to me what he does? It sounds like you're trying to whip up resentment.

Just a suggestion: if you don't want your "fucking $13 bucks a week", why not give it to your local food bank? I can assure you that will help the people you're talking about.

In 70 days he has bankrupt the country, made your taxes go up, Took your first born, There are people who will spend the 13 17 dollars wisely and be glad to have it. John McCain wouldn't have given you 2 cents and chopped the tax rate for the 250,000 people a lot more than they have now. Corp would not have to pay and they can ship your jobs overseas. Your 401k is down and Obama is to blame? How about the people who've been in charge for the last eight years? How about the Wall Streeters who played scam after scam on the people? No one wants to see those people in mansions while others have to live in cars, but he INHERITED this. No President since FDR has had to deal with so many difficult issues all at once, and if McCain had won, we'd probably be in WWIII right now.

But we are talking about different things. I'm talking about the stimulus. What is happening all around you will not be helped by the stimulus. I am sorry you are going through this. Your frustration and anger is completely understandable. I don't think talking about the stimulus, or talking about who is or is not responsible for this mess will be productive and I'd rather focus on you surviving this and getting through. I don't know how at risk you are. I know of a couple of resources that may help.

44. Yep...
It's a piddling amount that isn't going to do squat for the average person. On a macro scale it contributes to re-inflating the bubble - except that it isn't really enough to re-inflate it. And tax-cuts (along with bailouts) contribute to blowing up the national debt to such levels that at some point, probably under a Republican administration, it will provide an excuse for the government to do things like renege on the treasury bonds in the Social Security trust fund. And running up the debt and printing money to prop up bankers poses a very real threat of inflation down the road. It's conceivable that after getting their 401(k)s hammered and pulling out of stocks and moving to cash, people will get their cash hammered with hyper-inflation.

The Obama administration is attempting to prop up the same old trickle-down system with a kinder, gentler form of corporatism. The measly tax-cut is a nice bone that was thrown to the little people, but it is nothing but a pittance in the overall scheme of things, and it will eventually be taken back 100-fold via future inflation and a massive national debt created largely by Republicans, but exploding with these breathtaking handouts to bankers.

But I could get excited about things like this:

1) Taking the nation's money creation system out of the hands of private bankers
2) Writing tax laws that make it prohibitively expensive for corps to ship jobs overseas
3) Term-limits and election reform
4) Massive increases in estate taxes to get money and power out of the hands of a small number who have a huge negative influence on the country (Scaifes, Waltons, etc.)
5) Dismantling of wasteful government programs like "Home Security" and a restoration of civil rights, human rights, and privacy rights.

What we're seeing now is temporary band-aids and kicking the can down the road.

That said... it appears that most of these teabag turds are nothing but your typical right-wing anti-tax folks who have no ideology or principles beyond not wanting to pay taxes.

71. Absolutely correct -- AND welcome to DU!

When President Obama speaks, when he talks of greed and arrogance, I certainly hope he is including those folks at the top. Most of us here in the bottom are hard working, educated, further our educated, and do our damndest to pay things back while enjoying just a little out of life. We saw the fraud, and we voted him in because that was the change we perceived - especially when compared to McBush and VP candidate McMoose.

Republicans lost their credibility, and it'll remain lost for years -- if not decades.

I just hope the same doesn't happen to the Democrats.

Worse, nobody would want to owe Ralph Nader an apology for an outre comment he made just after the election.

Thanks texastoast and frogmarch as well as all of you at DU, man a lot of you are checking out my site today, the Tea-totalers Republican wacko day. Right on. I'm just expressing my opinions the best way I can with pictures, though I'm only in one small paper at least the web is exposure in these tough times that are a result of this 27 year dismantling of FDR's new deal, and lo and behold we've come full circle and landed on the doorstep of another GOP depression. Thanks Regan for kicking this off. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

he has promised to be the President of all the people. And I expect him to be forgiving of rebuffs to his hand outstretched in friendship.

Sometimes you gotta do that when you're truly trying to unify the country, instead of mouthing slogans about uniters and dividers.

They are getting a raise and a rebate from what I can gather. I wish people would read the Stimulus Package online before they spout off. (referring to the poster you responded to) I think what Obama did was pretty good and will help stimulate the economy. It is just going to take time.

Like the guys flipping signs on the side of the road in front of a business. When I lived in San Diego, there were these protesters that were 'hired', yes, 'hired' to stand outside of the company I worked for and hold a banner..."Shame on XXXXXX, unfair, blah blah blah.". There reasoning was flawed to start with, but so be it. But if the people organizing a protest can't find time to attend their own protest it's not REALLY a protest. Really.

by the increase in tobacco taxes, despite me being promised at as part of that 95%, NONE of my taxes would go up in any way.

You might not be a smoker, but if the cap-and-trade tax Obama wants ever gets passed, there goes your $27.10 per month and then some.

Just because Obama cut taxes doesn't mean they're not still too high. I'm sorry, but the teabaggers have a point. I'm just glad I don't have kids who will have to pick up the tab for all of this new spending.

We owe money again this year. We are lucky that we both continue to make more money each year lately. Our taxes keep going up. We have no kids so we get no deduction for that. We are DINKS and I think we pay more percentage wise than most people do.

I'd like to have the money in savings but if we are going to use my taxes for college for young people or health care or saving someone's home. I'm OK with paying more than most people as a percentage of our income. Just stop making me pay for wars!

63. My conservative freind in GA says it's a push for the so-called "Fair Tax" initiative
The fair tax shifts the tax burden to the poor and middle class, of course.

It was started here in GA by Radio dude Neil Boortz and one of our reps.

I have a counter proposal, BTW, called the "NO TAX" - in which we eliminate all personal income tax on people earning under 500k per year and only tax the wealthy and corporations.

What Obama claims he's going to do is increase taxes on the wealthy and Corp's in order to pay back the massive deficit he's running up.

So the (un)fair tax is a perfect rebuttal to his plan.

It must be stopped.

114. You can't shift the tax burden to the middle class
because it already rests on the middle class.

I'm middle class. I make OK money, not great, not terrible. I pay far more in taxes as a percentage of my income than people lower on the income ladder AND ALSO far more than those higher on the income ladder. The middle class gets the high tax rate without any of the tax-offsetting boondoggles the well-off bought for themselves.

From what I understand, they're just reducing the amount of taxes withheld from your paycheck. Unless the tax tables are changed, won't we all just have this amount reduced from any refund we get...or owe this amount if no refund is due?

Maybe I'm confused...

So the tax tables for everyone making under $250,000 will be adjusted downward by 2010?

My concern is that if they're not, there's gonna be an awful lot of folks caught unaware next year when they file. That would be very not good.

65. 250k and under tax cuts
This 250k and below tax cut is not entirely true. If you look at the Making Work Pay tax credit, the credit is phased out at 75k, not 250k. So I don't know where the 250k number comes from.

So is 75k the marker between middle-class and upper-class? Because I make more than 75k, and I am by NO means rich- but I don't get a tax credit, and I don't get the $8,000 homebuyer credit. It's kind of bs.

78. In the end, facts do not matter to some people
They would never vote for a Dem anyway. Watching some video of those demonstrations, there are people there who believe we should burn books and nobody should go to college, They believe Obama is Muslim, socialist, not born in this country and that the Commies are coming to get them. Not all of those people there believe that, but, the point is, this is a highly radical group, nobody is winning or losing any election with these voters. All it really means is that the GOP is getting more and more fringe instead of working towards gaining ground in the demographics that they have been losing ground in. It's not good for the party, and maybe even not good for our country, because it means one of our great political parties has just gone off the deep end. That hurts policy.

83. I wish it were just as you say and I am a socialist
But many people are there at the protests in a non partisan way because the incredible fraud and unchecked greed in the securities market. Our current leader's resulting bailout and the continuation of TARP has effectively looted the United States by the financial class. Please take a moment and go read this;

http://www.market-ticker.org/archives/P2.html

We could have saved Detroit 127 times over for what we have given to AIG. We have a fraudulent financial system that is raping the taxpayer. This is truly worthy of protest from all sides of our two party system.

81. Obama to tea-baggers: "Suck my balls."
Oops! Can I say that here?

Because that's what Obama SHOULD have said.

111. No thanks for that visual.
Obama to tea-baggers: "Suck my balls."

Yes, we got the double meaning. But you just had to post that? Why, for the shock-jock effect?

I'm sure President Obama would just love to have his daughters read your post.

134. No shock jock effect needed. It's just plain funny.

Please lighten up. DU can be a bit of a ribald place, and Obama's daughters will hear much worse throughout their lives.

So will you. What I said was pretty tame in the grand scheme of things.

restore progressive taxation to past levels ---

and to re-regulate capitalism --- to the hilt!

131. Excuse me?
Past levels? Seriously--our taxcode is currently the most progressive in the world. How that working out fur yah?

But a new study on inequality by researchers at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris reveals that when it comes to household taxes (income taxes and employee social security contributions) the U.S. "has the most progressive tax system and collects the largest share of taxes from the richest 10% of the population." As Column 1 in the table below shows, the U.S. tax system is far more progressive—meaning pro-poor—than similar systems in countries most Americans identify with high taxes, such as France and Sweden.

93. I have an idea
Split the nation into two parts, one that has taxes and one that has no taxes. Let the tax complainers live in the tax free nation. I am sure they would love it. Raffles to fund defense, home schooling only, do-it-yourself road building. Sounds great.

105. The media won't show us a helicopter view of the tea parties
Because if they did, the whole fake Tea Party movement would be discredited more than it is, when people see how disinterested people were in their corporate-sponsored fraud.

When has tax cuts combined with massive spending not create huge deficits? It didn't work for Reagan or Bush.
