Clinton arrives in Israel on first visit as US top diplomat

BEN GURION AIRPORT, Israel (AFP) — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Israel on Monday evening on her first visit to the Middle East since taking office.

She flew in from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh where she took part in an international donors' conference on Gaza and insisted that aid for the war-battered territory must be accompanied by a new drive for Middle East peace.

She will also holds talks with right-wing Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu who has been tasked with forming a new government after last month's general election.


Her envoy for the ME is with her:
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speaks with US special envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell




On Wednesday, she is to travel to the West Bank town of Ramallah for talks with Palestinian leaders.

1. She addressed the Gaza Reconstruction Conference
Doesn't look like the rumors about the US talking to Hamas are true.

"She also appeared to make it clear that US financial support is contingent on management by the Palestinian Authority, saying “that the international community is committed to.. help the Palestinian Authority’s efforts to improve the lives of all the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank.” She further pointed to the “responsible Palestinian partners, including President Abbas and Prime Minister Fayyad,” when discussing progress in the lives and governance of Palestinians."
