Ex-VP Dick Cheney outraged President Bush didn't grant 'Scooter' Libby full pardon

DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF

Tuesday, February 17th 2009, 1:33 AM

WASHINGTON - In the waning days of the Bush administration, Vice President Dick Cheney launched a last-ditch campaign to persuade his boss to pardon Lewis (Scooter) Libby - and was furious when President George W. Bush wouldn't budge.

Sources close to Cheney told the Daily News the former vice president repeatedly pressed Bush to pardon Libby, arguing his ex-chief of staff and longtime alter ego deserved a full exoneration - even though Bush had already kept Libby out of jail by commuting his 30-month prison sentence.

"He tried to make it happen right up until the very end," one Cheney associate said.

In multiple conversations, both in person and over the telephone, Cheney tried to get Bush to change his mind.

We know the truth. They're all complicit in this crime and libby deserved to take the rap for cheney when he avoided the rap.

36. Yup , and add, probably smoke to hide that Irv can use the 5th.
Chaney's not mad at all, in fact he's a happy as a fly on schiesen. Commuted, I. Scooties Libby does not go to jail, and CAN INVOKE THE 5TH. As pardoned, he cannot invoke the 5th and would HAVE TO testify against Cheney.

Irv "scooties" Libby lost his law license. Cheney had better keep up the friendship payments. A nice Halliburton job sounds wonderful. Full pension, full benefits, and plenty of fun to be had, rather then to spend time in dank old courthouses.

6. What Cheney is scared of is Scoots having a "Come to Jesus" moment.
Sooner or later, Scooty Doo is gonna figure out just how much of a chump he has been played for. When he does he is gonna call 1-800-someonewhogivesafuck and start the wheels in motion to do a full gut dump.

In some formerly powerful circles, incontenance will be the order of the day.

The din from popping popcorn will be deafening.

shitting up his back. If Scooter squawks, the fingers are going to point everyone-knows-where. Whatcha wanna bet Darth plays the "you wouldn't put an ailin' ol' man in jail" card when it comes down to it.

He made astronomical profit from the blood of Americans. He acted completely above the law, worse than Nixon ever thought about being. He has the murder of patriots on his hands. He showed mercy toward none. He deserves none in return. Let him rot in Leavenworth.

Without in any way understating the awfulness of W's misdeeds, he would have been (a little) better without Uncle Dick pulling the strings from behind the curtain until W told him to get fuck himself around the time of the Scooter Libby affair.

10. I think Bushs refusal to pardon Libby
is a shot across the bow to Cheney. I think Bush (more so sr. than jr.) realizes the legal jeopardy they are in and it's boiling down to who will spill there guts to future prosecutors first. Bushs failure to pardon Libby tells those interested that he's not opposed to giving up the goods on Cheney. Cheney is impervious - and to some degree, so is Libby.

Until then, you will remain in my thoughts and prayers

18. that might be, but probably not.
I think after the verdict, Bush woke up a bit, heard that all the domestic advice he got from Cheney was for shit, and that our economy was in a tailspin, even in 2007. I think he woke up and realized that he lost 2006 votes because what he said (and was repeatedly told) about Iraq was all wrong. And who told him? Cheney. I think that he started distancing himself from Cheney internally for a couple of years, and only now do we see when the cracks began to form.

It must have taken years, but somehow, GHW Bush got himself back in the decision-making loops, probably using James Baker and the Iraq Study Group, probably also using other former underlings.

I would not be surprised at all if * also cut a private deal with President-elect Obama, to provide himself with some degree of immunity if he left his flying monkeys open to charges.

It also would not be surprising to me if selected others were specifically exempted from future prosecution, most notably Karl Rove. That would explain the peculiar wiggle that the Obama administration is pulling with regard to Rove's testimony before Congress.

Edit: I should add that if * really does have Narcissistic Personality Disorder (and he seems to meet all nine of the criteria offered by the DSM-IV), then * is simply in touch with his inner prick, throwing his sycophants under the bus and punishing them for "disloyalty" for being so stupid as to get caught carrying out * administration orders.

20. That's what outrages Dick Cheney?
Not some guy shooting another guy in the face, then retiring back to the manse for dinner and drinks, a good night's sleep, and then someone finally calling the authorities for him the next day? That doesn't outrage Dick Cheney.

Not torturing people to death? That doesn't outrage Dick Cheney.

Not ignoring lawful subpoenas and subverting the rule of law? That doesn't outrage Dick Cheney.

Not running government in a fair and open manner, but instead governing by secret fiat, threats and dark mutterings? That doesn't outrage Dick Cheney.

You know, running down the very short list of things that outrage Dick Cheney and the very long list of things that Dick Cheney thinks are just as fine as paint, one might draw the conclusion that Dick Cheney is an inhuman monster who should be indicted, tried, convicted, and locked away from decent society for a very, very long time.

that i was certain would come, but was elated that there were none. That was big news the media simply refused to cover. I'm leery that there was some sort of prior agreement to not prosecute, but hopeful that the truth will come out and the guilty will be held to account.

This is all too scripted. They are up to something, do i know what? NO, but i don't trust this crap for a second.

i can too easily see too many scenarios where they would want to give the impression that cheney is furious cuz bush wouldn't pardon. ya right! Did cheney make a promise to scooter that he needed an out for 'i tried my ass off til the end, they shut me down the whole way' etc, etc. who knows what it is, but this is nonsense.

Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 09:47 AM by peacetalksforall
was Pres. by the crafted words they fed him and the decisions they allowed him. They needed him lifted up and in a good mood so that he wouldn't drink, but would stay in the mood to get on a flight to go raise funds with selected, adoring audiences.

Things started to dawn on him when he 'lost' Rove and other less skilled people were advising him and he became obsessed with legacy and a certain reality that the glow of 9-11 had worn off and the invasion was a failure for its original purpose which was ownership of the earth resources through a scam arrangement. Bush might have broken through the wall created around his head when he found out he wasn't going to end up as rich as he had been led to believe when they convinced him to be President.

Too fanciful? It's all speculation right now. No matter what we learn, I stand by my position that they constantly groomed, propped up, and deluded him to act, to assess, to re-act.

C-Span should run another poll to determine how 'administrations' score. I will never understand how he got a 6th up from bottom. They should run the poll again in a year and every year after. It will take years of statements, books, and government document reconstruction to assess, plus the analysis of the effects of all the money stolen from us.

In spite of the grooming, he couldn't speak smoothly or precisely because the grooming was designed to make sure he didn't shoot off his mouth and reveal their real rationale for doing what they did. He appeared to need every opportunity to smart off and justify in his own twisted fraternity way. He had to constantly remember dual realities of propaganda. He was over and under managed because he was their puppet.

Someone must have explained it all too him when told an absolute no - that he couldn't do something. Or when he was told to say no to Cheney and was given the reason why. Probably all realted to the Pentagon.

Why not pardon the guy? There was nothing left to lose.

The only way this makes sense is if Bush's twisted little mind is convinced that history will ignore the big things over 8 years and somehow reward him for not being as dishonorable as he could have been in the last 10 minutes.

This is how Bush's brain works.

A disaster is a much more accurate and appropriate description.

That shrub "the Decider" is considered by many historians to have not been the worst US president of all time certainly indicates just how screwed up our supposed "democracy" has been, and continues to be, when electing our "leaders".

Only one certainty: We get the best President that money can buy!

How sweet it is...

He's a liar, a scoundrel, and a whiny little bitch! Trying to get his accomplice, his partner in TREASON, off with a pardon and then whining about not getting his way...

It feels really good to write that here on DU amongst friends. I still may be a raving lunatic when it comes to Bush/Cheney, but at least I'm not alone!!!

Whatever his reasons, and he might be trying to pull something, (personally, I think he thinks he's master of the universe and everyone must do as he says or else), I wish he would just go far, far away never to return.

45. Thanks
Some people might think the traitor label a little hyperbolic, but I think it's completely reasonable and true- I mean he outed an undercover CIA agent who was working on controlling the spread of WMDs to discredit the discreditation of his BS reasons to take this country to war, for shit's sake. If that's not treason, I don't know what is...

And it is good to know that my fellow DUers can relate to my perfectly reasonable conclusions!
