Feds allege plot to destroy Fannie Mae data
Source: AP

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — A fired Fannie Mae contract worker pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges he planted a virus designed to destroy all the data on the mortgage giant's 4,000 computer servers nationwide, according to federal prosecutors.

If the virus had been released as planned on Saturday, the Justice Department said the disruption could have cost millions of dollars and shut down operations for a week at the largest U.S. mortgage finance company.

Rajendrasinh B. Makwana, 35, of Glen Allen, Va., pleaded not guilty Friday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore to one count of computer intrusion, the U.S. attorney's office said.

...

Makwana, a citizen of India, was fired early on the afternoon of Oct. 24 from his job at Fannie Mae's data center in Urbana, about 35 miles from the company's Washington headquarters, according to court records. An affidavit states he was fired for erroneously writing programming instructions two weeks earlier that changed the settings on high-speed computers called servers that are connected to multiple network users.

Before surrendering his Fannie Mae badge and laptop computer at the end of the day Oct. 24, Makwana "intentionally and without authorization caused and attempted to cause damage to Fannie Mae's computer network by entering malicious code," according to an indictment returned Tuesday.

The code, if executed this Saturday as planned, "would have resulted in destroying and altering all of the data on Fannie Mae servers," the indictment states.

2. Damn, there's a (not very small) part of me that wishes this had succeeded.
Hey, whattya want I grew up on Chuck Palhniuk books!

And anyway, resetting all records back to 0 could scarcely be any worse than wading through the mess that is already there. I'm sorry, I don't buy the line about bailing out irreponsible and criminal financial behemoths anymore. Actually, I never did. If the banks fall tomorrow, it won't be any worse than throwing billions/trillions into their black holes of nonliquidity and waiting for them to get swallowed up by another flailing beast or fall anyway. Best to just slaughter them NOW and try to salvage something.

4. Another reason to shut down the H1-B visa program

Over 700,000 high tech jobs were lost over the last two years, and few of them were visa holders.

7. Nothing to do with being a foreigner...any disgruntled employee
carries this risk...which is why many people that get fired from financial companies are escorted out immediately by security with their belongings mailed to them. ie - Thanks for the service - now get the fuck out!

8. You mean outsourcing Insurance, Mortgage and Credit Card billing to Satyam is bad?
I recently carried Health Insurance which was facilitated by three different organizations as part of a pre-existing condition. I have long fallen for the line that one Must have health insurance to protect oneself "Just in Case".

Well, first of all, over the past few years I have learned that Doctors are manipulated into what they learn by Big Pharma and other profit oriented entities. Real research on historical cures does not exist for them, and they happily parrot cures to what ails you, instead of promoting and staying in good health.

In 2007, the start of the new year, I noticed that my deductible went up. After doing the numbers, it appeared that the deductible now consumed and additional 100% of my premium for ongoig maintenance medications. I asked numerous time for an explanation of the charges, how the deductible was arrived at and so forth. I made the requests in person and via mail, but never once was able to find a single person that was able to explain it. Even written letters were ignored and remain unanswered. At a certain point, when I discovered that medication that was covered under copay was going to cost me over $200.00 due to this previously unknown deductible, I refused the prescription. This led to 4 months of a bill collector trying to collect on medications never received. I wrote a letter to the billing department, and the matter just disappeared without any notice from the insurance company.

At the end of 2008, they begged me to come in for annual tests, which had been pre-approved and ordered. I coordinated with the doctor and said that I want the minimum number of tests, and I don't want any surprise billing. They agreed and I got my test. A month later, I received a bill for $10.00, apparently for their costs of negotiating a $435.00 lab fee to $225.00, but only paying 215.00.

That was the last straw. The money I paid to that sham could have housed and fed me for 8 months in a very nice appartment. The numbers did not make sense to me, and honestly, I feel that I can take better care of my health than our broken, criminally incompetent medical system.

I had suspected that the insurance company had problems with their billing software, and they mentioned in the Pharmacy all the time. How it was indecipherable, or how it would take 3 or four people to either perform a transaction, or reverse one. Additioanlly, they failed to give receipts for the purchases of medicines, and it obfuscated transactions down to a 8 digit code number. When I asked for detailed records of medications, their cost after copay and before, theis information was only availlable after a HIPAA relaese.

So, I made the sensible decision to cut loose from this failing system and speak with my wallet.

It took three months for their system to notice that I had quietly dropped out of the system by not paying the monthly bill. The first came as notices that I was in the dangerous position of "Losing Your Health Coverage" and warned me that I would be in dire straits should an illness occur.

Finally, after 4 months I started receiving "Certificates of Creditable Coverage", which remind you in great detail how terrible it would be for you to lose the documents, as you may not be able to get insurance due to pre-existing condition clauses.

One of the Certificates was quite interesting. It was titled "Certificate of Credible Coverage" Thats right "Credible"! It was not written in English I grew up with, and when I look at it I sense fraud. Furthermore, the coverage dates are for 1999 - 2000 period!

I am more than ever convinced that this is the result of Outsourcing to the like if Infosys, Satyam and other firms the deal with this sort of bean counting. This is the payback that we get, not to mention the fact that outsourcing puts all of our data at risk if people decide to take a flash drive to work.

I am fortunate that I know many healers that know the benefits of Homeopathy, good food and healthy living, because I could be stuck in the fear that my health is dependant on the American Medical system, when in fact, the American Health System jeopardizes my health, whether through ineptitude, increased stress, more unneccessary drugs, and Profit over the welfare of the people

10. I applaud you for following your instincts and common sense.
We need affordable and intelligent health care, not health insurance.
And there is little "health care" available, instead it is
"prescription care".
Like you, we do not carry insurance.
The one time we did, it was a nightmare.
We put the monthly premium amount in the bank, and have for 10 years.

9. I personally would like to know the real story on this -
I have read that a lot of people from India who come here feel trapped by H-1B visas when it comes to their advancement and pay. There is a link on the internet stating he did graduate from the Narmda High School in India so it looks like he might have been here on one. Just wondering how many of these H-1B visa workers have access to high level documents and programs.
