Sarah Palin: From running mate to Time's runner-up
Source: LA Times

Completely ignoring Al Gore because he'd already won the world's other top two prizes -- the Nobel and Oscar -- and pretty well rested on his warming climate laurels this year, Time magazine has chosen Alaska's Republican Gov. Sarah Palin as a runner-up Person of the Year.

Along with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Secretary of the Treasury Henry M. Paulson Jr.

Also director Zhang Yimou.

Time calls hers "the most astonishing political debut in modern times" and says the 44-year-old mother of five -- who upset a corrupt GOP party establishment in a place many people don't ever want to visit -- was "a one-woman rescue team for the Republican ticket."

Although many prominent Republicans campaigned for Saxby Chambliss in the recent Georgia Senate runoff, it wasn't until Palin spent a day there that Chambliss actually won easily over a Democrat endorsed by Obama and Gore.

6. No. Chambliss won because of depressed turnout since the re-election was after Nov.4th
Palin did show up but that was going to be very difficult to win on the re-run

4. Well, that takes a little shine off the choosing of Barrack Obama as PotY.
I mean, really. I can see the comparisons.

First non-white president. First woman to be chosen as a running mate....oh wait.

Both excellent communicators.....oh wait.

Both scholarly types with impeccable resumes......oh wait.

Both running a long primary process to get against a fairly powerful political machine......oh wait.

Gosh.....they must have had to flip a coin to decide between those two.

5. As many know, Person of the Year doesn't mean you've done good things
While it may mean that, it is more a gauge of influence, etc, good or bad. I would certainly expect to see Palin in the Top 10 using that criteria. I mean, c'mon, Hitler and the Ayatollah Khomeini were Time's Person of the Year once.

8. The chief criterion is supposed to be someone who, "for better or worse,
...has done the most to influence the events of the year".

Sarah Palin!? Are you fucking kidding me? Can I be forgiven for wondering what the fuck she did that actually influenced anything, beyond an upswing in sales of her eyeglass frames? She was exposed as a ridiculous joke in front of the entire world.

Jesus Christ.

9. Gotta admit, she did make quite a splash
In that filthy cesspool otherwise known as the GOP.

Time isn't always known for seeking out people of great character for their "Man of the Year" awards. I get the impression they look for notoriety more than accomplishment.

13. What's that sucking sound I hear?
Is the Mighty Wurlitzer(tm) really desperate/stupid enough to think that Palin will in the future be a viable national candidate? Do they REALLY want to live in a world where that is so?

21. The Georgia election was after EVERYONE visited, not just Palin.
It's not like she was campaigning after it was over. It's amazing some argue that...as if he lost and his opponent won the election before she came.
