Mixed Messages for Bush (Newsweek poll - * gets slight bump up on Iraq)
http://www.msnbc.com/news/944507.asp?0cl=c1

Although attacks on American soldiers in Iraq have not stopped, George W. Bush’s approval ratings are up slightly following the killing of Saddam Hussein’s sons, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. Fifty-seven percent of respondents say they approve of how the president is doing his job—up 2 percent from two weeks ago—and 58 percent approve of the way he’s handling the situation in Iraq, up 5 percent.

SINCE THE DEATHS of Uday and Qusay Hussein on July 22, confidence in Washington’s ability to stabilize Iraq has risen. Twenty-one percent of Americans are now very confident and 40 percent are somewhat confident that the United States will be able to establish a stable democratic government in Iraq—up 6 points and 1 point, respectively, from two weeks ago. Still, 59 percent think recent events probably won’t affect the number of attacks on U.S. troops, and 69 percent believe it’s very important that Saddam Hussein is killed or captured.

Despite charges that the Bush administration exaggerated or deceived the nation to make its case for war in Iraq, the majority of Americans still trust the president. Sixty percent of them say that Bush impresses them as a trustworthy person—the same number who responded this way during his early months in office. A total of 56 percent think he did not purposely mislead the public about evidence that Iraq possessed banned weapons-a rise of three percent from mid-July.

Most Americans—72 percent—also see the president as someone who is able to get things done, up 12 percent since he first took office in 2001. Almost half of Americans—49 percent—would like to see him reelected.

--snip--

Only 43 percent of Americans approve of the way Bush is handling the economy, the lowest rating since he entered office. He also received his lowest approval ratings in how he is handling health care (39 percent) and the federal budget deficit (34 percent.)

1. He IS able to get things done
He trashed our international standing, our economy, he's rammed through dozens of extreme right wing rule changes in domestic policies and talk about UNITING. Can he EVER get that done- Sunis and Shiites, Secularist Islam and fundamentalist Islam, Greens and Dems, Dick Armey and the ACLU.

Done Done Done

3. until the point is driven home and hard
that bushco has MURDRED innocent people -- and many americans begin to feel a sence of shame for the destruction THEY have caused there will be more of this kind of reaction to bush.
admittedly they probably ask people who they ''know'' are going to be bush lickers -- but they are legion and it will take safe dropping from 6 stories to get their attention.

5. This is consistant with the polls about him
He has been keeping his electability numbers up because of the war, and war related things. Starting the war, USS Abraham Lincoln, Jessica Lynch, Oday and Qusay. He lives from spot to spot on these things. He is going with his strong suit and that is war/picking fights. He is also going to bring up the WTC again next year at the Repug convention in NYC. He lives moment to moment on these little things. I have heard that 30% of the population is hard core republican. They vote republican, defend them etc.. no matter what. 20% do this for the Dems. 50% are intelligent enough to look at the issues, or are mindless sheep. He keeps that "trustworthy" image with people by calling on the name of God. He keeps that "getting things done" image by living spot to spot. How do you take that away from him? Link him to Black Box voting? I don't think that will do it unless you can show that beyond a doubt that he knowingly wrote the code and he did it with the intention to cheat. Expose him for being AWOL, drunk, cocaine using, statutory rape. Good luck, that will be buried real quick unless you get witnesses, original documents etc. and that will not happen. So how do you get him? Point out that everyone around him is rotten so he is guilty by association? How did a blow job and 18 soldiers bring down Clinton? There in lies your answer. We don't have control of the senate or house, we don't have the millions of dollars to pursue this with a high profile lawyer. I think until you do have that, it will be looked at as partisan and not a lot more than that.

8. Wait till Nov. 2004
They can keep polling, right now people are still shaky from all that he has done. When they look around and sees what he has been up to, just wait and see how fast he'll be out on his rear end!
