UN envoy urges N. Korea to accept food from South

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The U.N.'s special investigator on human rights in North Korea urged the impoverished nation Friday to look beyond emergency aid and to focus on developing sustainable agricultural practices.

The U.N.'s food agency said recently that millions of North Korea's 23 million people are going hungry.

"Food aid alone is actually not adequate. We must look to food security," Vitit Muntarbhorn said at a news conference in Seoul.

He also urged North Korea to accept food aid from South Korea, noting that the South is waiting for a response to its offer to send 50,000 tons of corn across the border.
