Another Illinois presidential endorsement
Associated Press
8:55 PM CDT, October 29, 2008
Barack Obama for President.

For the office of president, The Journal-Standard submits an endorsement for Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

An assessment of the national landscape provides enough argument that change, whether it is provided by either candidate, is an absolute necessity.

This country is spending $10 billion a month on two wars, it is still assessing the extent of a financial crisis that brought down several once-reputable firms on Wall Street, it is flirting with an expansion of armed conflict in Iran on the issue of nuclear weapons, its manufacturing economy has been ravaged and exported to a point that the automobile industry is on the verge of bankruptcy, and we are challenged with an imminent need to end our dependency on fossil fuel. Under the Bush administration, the tested policy of dividing the world into "for us, or against us," has clearly failed. Even our allies publicly detest the arrogance of our "go it alone" initiatives. With that backdrop, it has been relatively easy to measure the success and failure of each candidate's ability to move this country in a different direction.

1. I subscribe to this paper.
It is the closest daily paper to my hometown that I can read without puking every morning. The Rockford Register Star is abysmal. The Journal/Standard was better when it was locally owned, but it is still pretty good. They seem to try to be fair about printing conservative and liberal viewpoints in their columns and letters to the editor. They have a mix of local and national/international news. I do not like that they use AP, and I have complained to their editor when those articles seem too biased. He listens.

I have had several LTTEs and even some guest columns printed there.

6. Come visit The Ogle County Democrats some time.
It would be fun if you could attend our annual picnic at White Pines State Park. I would enjoy meeting and introducing another DUer.
